Hattertown area in southwest Newtown is another good option. Beautiful area with horse farms and can be main st. In Westport in 30 mins , Poverty Hollow Rd to rt. 53.

But be careful Trumbull has somewhat high taxes. Shelton is average and more rural then Trumbull and cheaper as well, but it is farther commute from Westport, although it should still be OK. From Shelton you can take CT-8 S and then take back roads from Bridgeport to Westport rather then I-95 or the Merritt.
Both Shelton and Trumbull are not convenient backroad commutes. You can jump on backroads in Trumbull, but why wouldn't the OP just do that now from Milford? It would accomplish the same thing.

I'll third Bethel and southern Newtown. Anything else is out of your budget or too far for an easy backroad commute.

Please list the areas of Trumbull and Shelton that are "rural".

TIA.

White Hills area of Shelton is pretty rural. Either way it's a bad reco, Bethel is an obvious choice, and I'll 2nd southern Newtown if the OP can find something at their budget. Even Monroe would work, especially near 59.

Bethel is the no-brainer choice here based on what you describe and the kind of ride you want. Plus, you can choose to live in a very walkable downtown or in the relative woods but still be near the downtown. Also, the town has the (relative, to Fairfield County) diversity you seem to seek, with an interesting mix of folks: blue collar to artsy to very upscale and lots in between.

I agree. Newtown, Monroe and Bethel would be good choices. Jay

Another vote for Bethel and the south end of Newtown.

Okay so what I'm looking for:

-A more country town- I prefer more of a rolling farmland kind of country (think Litchfield) but am not opposed to more wooded mountainy country (like I grew up mostly with in Canton).

-300ish budget- looking for about 1500 square feet and a little bit of property. Not a ton- but would love to have some space between neighbors for the dogs to bark their little heads off at squirrels without bothering too many people.

-A town that isn't upper class nor very blue collar. Something right in the middle or at least not too far to one extreme. (I grew up for 5 years in Naugatuck before Canton- and it's not my cup of tea for instance. Just too.... mill town ish?)

I do like Bethel, but i didn't recommend it because Bethel does have more dense multi-zone areas than Newtown. I have noticed in Bethel that it isn't uncommon for a house to have a ~.25acre lot, and the house next to it has 5X the land. And the Bethel homes with land(>1 Acre) are harder to come by at your price point than they are in Newtown.
