I am planning on heading up to Boston from Hartford next week. I was wondering what the best way to get up there is. Is there a train I could drive to and park my car and take the rest of the way in like you can going down to New York? Thanks.

i don't know how far you plan on driving but there are commuter rail and subway options once you get into Massachusetts. the Green Line has i believe a couple of stops around Newton-Wellesley at which you can park your car then take the train in. there is also a commuter line (the Purple Line as i call it) that comes in from Worcester/Framingham which are even further west than Newton. not sure of the details but here's a link to the MBTA website..

MBTA

to get to Mass in the first place is easy - just take 84E until it merges with the Mass Pike (I90).

you can take the amtrak from Springfield, schedule is likited and it does cost a lot.if you really do not want to drive in to the city, you could park at the riverside station lot at the end of the green lines D spur.from there it is about a 1/2 hour ride into government center.

Boston is a pretty short drive from Hartford. Just jump on I-84 east to I-90 east. You should be able to make pretty good time.

As for public transport, that would be slower. You could probably pick up Amtrak either in Springfield or New Haven, or maybe New London. I don't think it makes sense to go to either New Haven or New London from Hartford. I don't know how the service is from Springfield.

What's your destination in Boston?

Back in the early 90s I used to road trip to Boston a lot. What I did was park at the Alewife station on the Red Line and then go in, they had a large relatively inexpensive parking lot (don't know if the price has gone up too much). I had some friends who lived in suburban Boston who did that a lot that's how I learned of it. Boston actually has a lot more options for parking at a subway station than NYC does; for example if I want to save on commuter rail and take the NY subway for an occasional trip to Manhattan I usually have to find street parking somewhere in the Bronx near the station and sometimes it's not even a safe area for your car. The only major NY subway parking lot I know of is near Citi Field and being in Queens that doesn't make sense to use unless you're coming in from Long Island (and of course it's pretty crowded if there's a Mets game going on ).

Have fun!

Agree with this. I have relatives who live across from the Alewife station and have parked there on weekends. It's $7/day and I have not seen it full. It's a quick 1 hr, 40 min from West Hartford...Mass Pike to I-95/128 to Rt 2 East, and get off at the very last exit.

ugh mass pike to I-95 to rte 2? EWWWW. That's ugly. Here's what I do whenever I want to go to Boston:

I-84 to I-90, get off at the Newtown exit, just before Storrow Drive. At the end of the exit, go in a general forward direction (not straight, more like - curving slightly right-ish, without actually taking a right). Then, take a right. Follow that road up and down the hill, around the left and to the right, and it'll bring you into Brighton. Park. Take the express bus to Boston for under $2.00. Parking is free.
