Fairfield, CT is somewhat expensive, so I may move. I will attempt to sell my house (6 years later, stupid housing market) and move. I have been considering New Haven and Upstate NY Cities (Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany). What do you think I should do? I heard the Downtowns of NY cities has revived a lot. Another upside to Upstate NY cities is traffic and I can fly to almost every city on the EC and Chicago via Buffalo and Rochester Airport. Although I will miss the New Haven food. I am traveling up to UNY for a week or two soon. New York is my favorite state also.

Those upstate NY cities have also sparked my interest as well. I am in the same boat as you...living in Fairfield County and dying to get out of here due to unreachable cost of housing within a reasonable commute.

However, the problem with Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse is JOBS. There are very few job openings in those cities. Albany seems to be a little better, but still not great. Upstate NY is somewhat depressed all along the Thruway. But yes, they have a lot of good things to speak of. No notable traffic congestion. Low cost of living. Perfect sized metro areas, etc. However, the climate is noticeably worse than CT. Those cities, however, are slightly Midwestern cultured compared to CT.

I'm actually planning to move back to the Hartford area soon, if all works out. Granted, I'm originally from there, so I might be biased. But, it's MUCH cheaper than Fairfield County. Traffic isn't nearly as bad, and the people are a bit more middle class / normal American, which I prefer. Climate is definitely better than upstate NY. And most importantly....JOBS are available in the area.

Upstate NY Pros
Less Traffic/More Freeways
Airports Within 15 Minutes
Larger Young People Population In Cities
Parts of Cities Safer Than New Haven

New Haven/Hartford Pros
Food
Access to NYC (Although JetBlue might make it be the same time), but it is cheaper
Climate
Don't have to convince girlfriend to move

Also, some part of Buffalo was rated the 3rd best neighborhood for art in the US.
Buffalo has a lower crime rate than Buffalo with taller buildings.
Rochester may build this Seaside Heights, NJ type boardwalk on Lake Ontario, along with luxury condos in Rochester's most crime filled area.
Jobs keep growing in all cities each year.

I went to school in Rochester NY for a year. It's not just the cold and the snow that's bad - most of the cities in upstate NY are windier than the Windy City of Chicago. The wind can really be brutal at times. The snow & cold is tolerable to me - the wind just made it horrible.

Back in the dark ages before iPods and downloadable music, Rochester did have a cool record store called "House of Guitars" - I think it's still there. Lots of rare stuff there.

My sister lives in the Buffalo area and is not native to the area (grew up in Westchester County, NY). She has lived there since 1991. Loves the area, says it's very "underrated" and that although the winters are a lot snowier than here, she says if you grew up anywhere in the Northeast you see enough winter anyway that you can deal with them or at least won't experience anything you haven't before, just more of it and that they deal with clearing snow a lot better than here. However, she's told me that unless you're lucky or have a big in-demand specialty, jobs are an issue (she's a tenured college professor so not a problem for her). Her boyfriend is also transplant from NYC (he came for college and stayed in the 2 decades since) and likes it up there too.

My biggest beef with upstate NY is the weather. I am not even talking about the snow but the winter clouds. OH GOD, the clouds. It can be depressing. With lake affect snow comes lake affect clouds and I can't stand going a week or more without seeing sunshine, which happens routinely in upstate NY. At least in CT snow is usually followed by brilliant sunshine. Not so up there. Gray, gray, and more gray is pretty standard.

Edited to add: this has been my experience in the Syracuse area specifically (and Finger Lakes/Ithaca down to Binghamton). I won't speak for Buffalo, where I have never spent any long period of time.
