You want overpriced tacos? Go to Bodega in Darien or Fairfield.
Overpriced for what it is, small tacos with barely anything in them. And lacking in flavor to boot. To each their own I suppose.

I don't love Bartaco, either. I agree that they are seriously overpriced, for what you get. Bodega has decent tacos--better than Bartaco. Bartaco is more of a go for drinks, eat when you are tipsy, IMO.

For GOOD tacos, hit the Long Wharf trucks or Taqueria Mexicana in West Haven. Delish.

El Coyote in Monroe, is fine. Baja's has been off lately, IMO. Puerto is good for the margaritas and guacamole.

I agree on Bartaco, great atmosphere but the tacos could use a little more substance. Also, just remembered Mexicali Rose in Newtown just up the road from El Coyote, another excellent little known place not too far from Trumbull.

I find Mexcali Rose bland too, like Baja's. The Newtown location isn't bad, but their new location in Bethel is TERRIBLE. Had a horrendous dinner there with my parents, and service was nonexistant.

So basically, I think every Mexican restaurant in the state has been mentioned in this thread.

I honestly think the OP is going to be disappointed anywhere they go. Some people don't realize how amazing the texmex is in SoCal. It's like searching for New Haven style Italian food in Tulsa, OK. Ain't gonna happen.

I must keep going to the wrong places in CA then.

At least several times in Santa Monica/LA and SF I was not disappointed, but not blown away either.

No, you have to go down to San Diego and try one of the whole in the wall joints where you order and get your food through a little window.

SF doesn't have great TexMex at all. SM/LA in my opinion are very touristy and bleh, so you have to get outside of those areas. I have a huge list of amazing places in Orange County, San Diego and a few in the "Valley" that you can check out next time you're there.

Well I doubt they have websites, but my favorites are Robertos on Carmel Valley Road, convenient to my office there. Los Dos Pedros on Turquoise St. in the Bird Rock section between Lajolla and Pacific Beach. Another good one on Mission Blvd. in PB near the end of Garnet St., I think it's Ramiro's.
