I'm not gonna do all your homeowork for you because navigating town websites is a total b*&h, but I will tell you what I do know....
The state of CT does NOT have a supreme rule on TARGET SHOOTING on your property. They leave that decision to the individual townships who can then make an ordinance against target shooting. Well, it wouldn't be "target shooting" per se, but they are worded something like "illegal to discharge a firearm blah blah blah"
Southington CT does not have an ordinance on discharging a firearms. I can and do shoot on my property. While my property is only 4 acres, there is a lot of undeveloped land between me and the nearest structures in the direction I shoot. I built a backstop about 7-8 ft high as well, using downed trees and some telephone pole that I found. I determined the most theoretically ideal direction to shoot using google maps, then my hiking GPS to get the bearing in real space. Safe as it can be.
I still only shoot handgun and 22lr though because, IMO, nothing short of owning 100 acres or abutting a large parcel of state land is safe to target shoot high caliber rounds.
Regarding distance, you need to make sure your not being negligent. If you live in a subdivision with .25 acre lots the idea of shooting in your yard is complete lunacy. But otherwise I have never heard of an ordnance with specific distances.
What some people get confused about is the "500 ft" law. But that only applies to HUNTING and is enforced by Conservation officers. I had a cop come to my house while I was shooting and he tried to pull that one on me. I made sure to record the encounter on video (horay smart phones) so that I would have evidence of him saying thats why he's arresting me (if it came to that--which it didn't). I guess the unbiased observer of a video camera made him think real long and hard about how sure he was that the law applied to anyhting but hunting. He was otherwise a very nice guy, I was just afraid of wasting 20k on legal fees to prove he doesn't know the law.
