That budget is a challenge for NYC commutability and decent schools, for sure.

Why do you think New Haven is your best option? There are safe areas, but it's a really rough commute. It is no cheaper than West Haven, and good areas of New Haven approach Milford in price - with higher taxes. Also the schools have issues unless you use the magnet schools. For your budget I would prioritize Stratford, and try and find a place close/walkable to train station. It will give you the shortest commute possible at that budget without seriously compromising schools. After that, I would look at Milford - though it tends to be a bit pricier near the train. A third option would be Shelton, which is a little further drive to train, but still within reason. Anything beyond those towns would be torturous as a commute. Orange would be an option that's even further (drive to West Haven or Milford train) which has excellent schools, but a long long commute.

If he has to take a train to the Bronx, just remember there are limited trains to those stops and you usually have to make a transfer.

How about central Bucks county, Pennsylvania instead? Great schools, a beautiful place. Or places in NJ.

You can't get to the Bronx in two hours from Doylestown and surrounding areas. I would try to stay North. 2 hours commute to the Bronx for 275k might be done also from the Putnam, Dutches, and Rockland counties, maybe even Columbia county.

But OP needs to be advised that 2 hour commute by train is very different than 2 hours commute by car.

I just saw that one of the homes I was thinking of just sold. It is a 4 bedroom cape on Aponyi Street just off Jennings Road. It looks like it need a bit of cosmetic work but is likely livable. It sold for $219,900. Not bad for Fairfield even if it needed some work. Jay

Those homes are sometimes for low income family's when I was looking in Fairfield I looked into that area as well and couldn't purchase it

I like Stratford in this situation, and in NY I'm thinking the towns along 84 in Putnam/lower Dutchess. If OP didn't like Naugatuck, Columbia County would be akin to a nightmare.

It wasn't even 1100 Square Feet. It was a bombed out foreclosure. And there was a bidding war on it, which i mentioned the other day:

The one on Hibiscus that you're thinking of is totally gutted and only 850SF. For $230K. The one on Apponyi was a foreclosure that was a total wreck for $190K and they're sorting through the multiple bids on the property. The one on Jennings is 720SF foreclosure at $185K. It does have a walk-up attic which would add ~260SF, but the house is very rough and the brick isn't for everybody. Would you like me to bore you some more about entry level homes in Fairfield?

Any questions??

Since husband works in the Bronx, the last leg of the trip is very important. You can get to Grand Central in 2 hours once you leave your house, but depending on where in the Bronx, it could take your husband 30-60 minutes by subway. The other option is to take the local MetroNorth which stops in the Bronx. Local is slower, and again, where in the Bronx does he need to get to?

For example if your husband works around Moshulu Pkwy, that's a very diferent commute than if he worked at 138th and Grand Concourse.

Hey, waddya know? The pictures of the foreclosure on Marlborough Terrace are still online. Listed for $265K, sold for $265K. On the crappy portion of the street(near THC, not Melville). BTW, there were 2 small illegal apartments in the basement that needed to be gutted.

455 MARLBOROUGH TER, Fairfield, CT, 06825 - MLS# B996810 - Estately

Basically what ^^ said. If taking the train to the Bronx, you would have to transfer at 125th Street. It would be hard to get a house within your budget, but are you limited to CT. You could get a place for under 275K in Dutchess/Putnam Counties in NY.
