Default Connecticut to North Carolina and Back??

Well, I moved to Charlotte about 14 months ago because I just could not afford to live in Fairfield County. Although I honestly like being here in Charlotte, I miss the damn Northeast. I miss things I never thought I'd miss. Also, with prices coming down a little, I am itching to go back. Not to Fairfied county though. Looking at New Haven or even Hartford. Has anyone else felt this way?

Oh yeah! I have posted this before. Moved to Raleigh a couple of years ago and I would do anything to come back. This Christmas confirmed it 100% but at the same time, my MIL has MS and is deteriorating. She did enjoy getting to see us and her grandchildren but I have to do what is right for my family. Kind of between a rock and a hard place.

My FIL even said to me yesterday "I can't undertsand why you would want to move back up there!" So I told him about the better schools in the NE, less traffic, more space and basically just a better life. He scoffed but I am beyond caring now.

I havent moved south 'yet'...............but I already know when we do go we WILL miss alot of things we enjoy right now. Like the short 1 Hr 15 min train ride to NYC..the Big E fair in Springfield Mass. just to name two things. Right now what your missing is about 6" of snow/ice on the ground and high temps barely at 40 deg. PS..prices on houses havent come down THAT much yet either.

I hear you, the weather is definitely better here, but the summer plain killed me last year here. 90 plus for days and days on end.

Default Don't do it!

As someone who grew up in Ffld Cty (Trumbull and Westport) and lives in Texas, I can sum it up with "Don't do it!" There are so many little things that I miss. I feel more at home with strangers when I land at Bradley to come visit then I do in a room full of people I know in Austin.

There are subtle differences-- aside from the lack of diners, good pizza, good Chinese food, true diversity and scenic beauty-- like the religious hegemony, lack of seaside, and qualities about the people that you will truly miss.

Contrary to popular stereotype, I have not found the south to be friendlier. I have found it to be far more judgemental, and superficial than the north. Today I was accused of "Jewing someone down," and told to "Have a blessed day..." It sounds nice when someone says they're praying for you, until you realize they're praying for you because they think you pray incorrectly...

Yes, we had the strecth down here of 100+ for 2 weeks this past summer. And the lack of water is getting alarming. I miss the real 4 seasons.

I hear what you are saying JP03 ... I've been down here in central Florida for a couple of years and we am making the moves to get back to CT next year. The house here goes on the market in March and when its sold we are outta' here. I miss the changing seasons, my long time friends and family. We are from Fairfield county and cannot afford to move back there and are checking out New Haven county to be close by to our "home area". Things I will not miss in Florida: threat of tornados or hurricanes, deed restricted developments, seven months of heat and humidty, no break from lawn maintenance and the flat horizon.

We are looking forward to buying a snow shovel and ice melt, racking leaves and the feeling of really being back home.

Yep, at least here in Carolina, we get some semblance of the 4 seasons. I'd go nuts in Florida....

I've done it twice.

Moved to Orlando at 20, (no regrets in hindsight) back to CT around 25 then to Charlotte NC (regretted that one) at 27 for a year or so and back to CT for the last 10 years.

I have a love hate relationship with CT. I love the countryside, love the history and culture (Not all of it), love being outdoors, the ocean etc. But I also absolutely hate the insane taxes, the out of control state goverment, cost of living and the widening gap between the poor and rich with no real middle class.

There are very few places left in the state IMO where a young couple or new family can purchase a nice newer home in a nice subdivision or neighborhood with clean streets, good schools, no ghetto culture and low crime for under $400K or even $300K which when you combine the insane taxes is a pretty big chunk to knock off every month.

I now have a child on the way, and believe you me I bust my hump to make a living (and make a decent one) just to afford a modest home and a modest lifestyle - but now with the wife losing a lot of her income and having to look at raising family I admit, my eyes are seeing things a little different. I simply do not wish to work 75 hours a week just to survive...I'm doing 60 now.

I'm also a Christian conservative and at odds with most of the people in the area ideologically speaking. I have friends both Christian and not and while it's generally a respectful conversation, I find myself tiring of being at odds with most people in respect to my core beliefs on the environment, (I'm a conservationist and actually LIVE IT not just talk it.), faith, government, family, morals etc etc.

So, for now I'm here - it's my home so I take the good with the bad.

For yourself, I would think long and hard to be sure you are not just homesick. Making a quick double move can really affect you for the long term.

Best of luck to you.

Jay

If you think it was hot around here for the few weeks of summer, then move to FL....year round heat and humidity, and NO change of seasons. And you can listen to the weather Channel day and night for 6 months of the year worrying about the next bad storm and when and where they "think" it will be!! Been there, done that, Not going back except to visit!!
