CT cities are densely populated in small areas with pretty hard defining lines between them and the suburbs unlike places other Metro areas. We do have some overflow into nearby suburbs but not much. Part of this is zoning which prevents people from moving into the suburbs as the housing stock is more limited and more expensive.
Having traveled to a lot of cities in the last 4 years for work often staying in and walking those cites rather then staying in the suburbs, almost no other place has quite the effect of crossing a town border and crime rates and poverty rates dropping that CT does.

I agree. CT is, and has always been, very segregated in terms of race and socioeconomics.

In practice, what this means is that the good parts of CT feel better and safer than basically anywhere else you could live. If poverty and crime are a cancer that affects every state, Connecticut's tumors are safely encapsulated and do not metastasize to threaten the rest of the body.

That is an unfair statement; there are plenty of blacks and Hispanics who make it out of the hood. They are just replaced by more immigrants so it looks like they never leave.

OK. Your statement is problematic as it exemplifies the thought that the "hoods" or cities are awful places that people need to leave in order to be successful. That stigma leads to the attitude that nothing should be done for the cities among citizens and politicians. Cities will continually have problems if people think it's something they have to run away from.

As for segregation between the burbs and the city - yes it does exist. White flight began out of fear of other races and it's still prevalent. Racial steering among realtors may be illegal but we are still dealing with the fallout from it (and I'm quite sure it still happens). Even between well off and poor, it exists. When towns re-zone to make it impossible for most income levels to purchase a home, it doesn't lead to a diverse demographic. So given that someone with a six figure income will still have trouble finding a home in several CT towns, it's no surprise that people can't move "up" and "make it out of the hood".

Aren't you a teacher in a city school? That's discouraging to hear that you don't think your students stand a chance unless they get out of their hometown. Pride leads to better living and changing things and it doesn't sound like you think they should have any pride.

I never said that the cities can't change, but think of how you would feel if you lived there. Would you want to keep living on a single floor of some multi-family home while hearing gun shots every week? There are plenty of good kids here and many want to get out. They see how nice life is around them and want their kids to be able to experience that too. This type of environment has existed for as long as immigrants have been coming to America so it is clearly not an easy problem to fix.
