I visited both cities this month and I noticed the pay stations for parking don't accept dollar bills altho they accept coins and credit cards. I wouldn't want to use a credit card for a small purchase like that and I rarely carry a lot of coins. I wonder why they didn't want to accept dollar bills. They are new machines so you would think they could have incorporated that into them.

The meters do accept dollar coins, but I rarely see those in circulation. I even asked for them at my bank and they didn't have any. When the post office still had vending machines they would give dollar coins as change, but that is the only place I've seen the dollar coins in use.

I know New Haven has some type of parking app where you can pay for parking via your phone, but I only have a dumb phone and can't use any apps.

Why not use your credit card?

You don't get any additional charges on your credit card outside of however much you select to pay....so I agree, why not just use it?

I think the above responses answer your question...most people (myself included) use credit cards for parking and don't bother with cash.

Perhaps the OP doesn't use his credit cards on a regular basis, and doesn't want the hassle of paying a miniscule CC bill for parking? Many people do still only use their credit cards for unanticipated purchases, rather than everyday expenses.

Then carry coins.

The new machines and apps serve most people fine.

I prefer to take my business to a place where i'm not charged for parking. But yeah, what you said works.

New Haven has pay stations?

Also, the New Haven parking meters do have an option to pay by calling a phone number, if you don't have a smart phone.

Parking sucks in any city, not just in CT.
