I spend time every summer in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. I am not a snowmobiler myself, however the town of Island Pond, VT considers itself the "Snowmobile Capital of Vermont" with extensive trails. It's a beautiful area and off the beaten path of the usual NY/NJ/CT crowd that flocks to VT.
I think the same is probably true for skiing. VT is our destination for skiing. Mostly southern VT. Some days 30 to 40% of the license plates in the parking lot are CT plates, especially places like Okemo and Mt. Snow. Stratton will have more NY/NJ due to its location, but still a lot of CT plates.
I assume because MA, NY, and NH folks have plenty of spots to go to within their state. CT on the other hand needs to step outside the border. And another assumption I'll make is that since more folks from northern CT look for winter sports, they rather travel to VT than MA since it's not bad of a drive. Coastal CT folks might rather go into NY or MA.
Another thing I look for is areas that rents the machines on site. I don't own one nor do I have a hitch to tow one from store to trail. Has to be on site.
Found this very cool site I never seen before! Nice work DEEP! Thanks willow wind for making me Google it again.
Snowmobiling is available at the following State Forests: American Legion in Barkhamsted, Cockaponset in Chester & Haddam, Housatonic in Sharon, Mohawk in Cornwall, Natchaug in Eastford, Naugatuck in Beacon Falls, Nipmuck in Union, Pachaug in Voluntown, Peoples in Barkhamsted, Pootatuck in New Fairfield, and Shenipsit in Stafford.
Reading through that site, very nicely detailed with trail info, but does anyone know if there is a location in CT near those parks to rent one?? If there's 4 of us how do you go about tugging it there?

I'm afraid there is no place in CT where you can rent a sled.
I willingly drive not just to VT to go snowmobiling, but wayy up to Northern Maine (6 to 7 hrs) and believe me, its WORTH it with some kick butt riding---much better than even the NE Kingdom of VT.

Gosh Cam, everyone I know who has a snow mobile has a pick up truck with a bed large enough for a snow mobile and a set of portable ramps to get it onto the truck.
I hate to say it, but for what you want, I thinkyou're going to have to head out of state. CT does a really poor job for anything mechanized and off road on state land.
