To not take the chemotherapy is akin to suicide.

And there is no slippery slope to chemo for the common cold. Chemo is for cancer. Period.

"Survive". She doesn't want to "survive". She wants to live and (just in my opinion), die. Not suffer and "survive".

I feel like there are some holes in the story, and I honestly don't back the mom 100%, but if that were my kid (and I have one that JUST turned 18), I'd be backing her wishes.

I've been through chemo and "survived". During chemo I continued to work (reduced schedule), travelled, taught, vacationed and spent time with family and friends.

A month after chemo was over I was back to my full (very full) schedule of activities.

If she wants to live, she has an 85% chance of doing so with chemo. Without it there is a 100% chance she'll die.

I certainly value the ability of a competent human to make choices about their body and health care... But based on the girl's comments-- "I don't feel sick now..." and "I might try chemo later..."-- she doesn't seem to have adult reasoning.

People often get confused as the MOST debilitating side effects are most often from radiation, not chemo. Most chemo patients tolerate it relatively well and continue to live life during the treatment.

Chemo is temporary. Dead is forever.

Pouring acids into an already acidic body is a horrible idea no matter how you look at it.
Repeating yourself doesn't make you correct.

You've been given the correct statistics more than once.

Was it ever said why she was refusing the treatment in the first place?

I agree with the court, but primarily because whether or not she is a "mature enough" minor for such a decision, she would not be of right mind given her condition to make such a decision anyway.

And yeah, that makes the mother incredibly problematic. You're just going to let your very sick daughter kill herself? Why? You think she's in her right frame of mind right now? Really?

I suppose she could move to another state, perhaps with relatives for a few months until she is 18 to skirt this mandate from the state. Personally, I don't think it is any of the state's business.

Her mother is totally behind her daughter's decision but the state stepped in. Are you saying the mother should have forced her daughter to do it? Jay

She's in state custody. Because her mother was allowing her to make deadly decisions regarding her medical treatment, CPS has stepped in.

It does raise interesting questions about state power. However, I'm not sure I want to live in a Darwinian environment where we allow children to make dumb decisions they won't live to regret-- if it's preventable.

I don't see how some of you think it's is okay for the government to over reach and make this choice for someone. The mother has backed up the daughters choice and that should be sufficient .

Chemo is not for everyone , It may work for some and may not for others. We are all different and don't react in the same ways . Just as Jay mentioned life is temporary. This judge should be stripped of their job , I hope this family gets support from others in the state and fight it more.
