jk, I had to quote Dodgeball there.
I like New Cannan. I live in Weston and personally I like New Cannan a lot. Its got a nice little downtown thing going there. Its better than crappy/overrated Wilton.

Come on... no need to belittle Wilton. At the very least, spell New Canaan correctly.

You should try talk radio. You purposefully misconstrue something I said, take it way out of context and then use the falsehood to attack over and over. I think you should read the original post, my friend.... or have someone read it to you.

Maybe we both misunderstood a little. Certainly not trying to attack and definately dont say hi to everyone on the street and have to admit I would be the worst talk show host ever. I read all the posts from the first page and came to the conclusion that the opinions were pretty 50/50 on whether NC is snobby or not. I also noticed that of those, most of the ones who thought it wasn't, grew up here. One posting was from a teenager who wished his/her parents new about how difficult it was for older children to "fit in" before they moved him/her here. We are all entitled to our opinion, that's what makes our country great. My opinion was that moving here has been incredibly difficult on my teenage daughters and that in general, people here are not friendly. Have we met nice people..yes of course we have. I think we all got a little carried away, I apologize if it seemed I was attacking you. You are entitled to your opinions as well. Good luck on your move back to CT.

I would like to answer this question from the point of view of someone who grew up in New Canaan (my parents moved there when I was 6). Yes, it absolutely is. I didnt realize it until I went away to college. I was having a little difficulty fitting in and my roommate told me I came across as a snob. I had no idea! I was having a bad day once and I was in the cafeteria getting lunch when a girl on line next to me said hi. I gave her a little bit of a nasty look, so she asked me if I was ok. In New Canaan people take a nasty look to mean "get out of my space". But the girl sat with me and I started talking and before I knew it, I had told her all about my pop quiz that morning and how unfair it was and how annoyed I was. By the end of lunch, I felt amazingly better...all because she said Hi. We have been friends ever since. When I come back to New Canaan to visit my parents, I see such a difference in the people. I never had a problem but I think back to middle school and high school and remember how miserable new kids were because they would not be accepted into the cliques that already existed. They learn this from their parents. If you dont belong to the country club or the field club, you dont belong..period! If you dont run in those circles, you wouldn't understand, but I still see it when I go home to visit. Now I know why my roommate told me I came across as a snob. Unless I run into someone I know in town (in NC), people dont even make eye contact with you. New Canaan does have some redeeming qualities. The education is excellent (or I wouldn't be at Notre Dame), downtown is beautiful, and it is located by other great towns like westport, ridgefield, wilton etc. There is always something to do. If your kids are young, then it is a great place to move to. If your kids are older than 10, I would NOT move there. They will have a major difficulty with fitting in. That is just my opinion and I hope no-one attacks me for it but I thought having the opinion of someone my age would help.

CT people are not rude, they are snobby. Rude people will insult you and are boisterous (think NYERS and NJ people). CT people are nice to you, IF you can get their attention. Otherwise they are aloof as heck and can't give a crap less about the people around them.
It has nothing to do with class either. This is a rich state, yet the people are snobby. Hmmmm

Coming from Northern Fairfield County, I happened to be in New Canaan one day and me and some friends asked someone at the high school where there was a grocery store. She looked at us like we had committed a murder and told us in the nastiest voice that New Canaan didn't have chain grocery stores. We laughed in her face and proceeded to joke by asking her "Well where the hell do you get your grociers from", she said the market.
Me and my friends were dying laughing beacuse we knew that New Canaan is a extremely weathly community but to scold some kids because they asked where a grocery store was complete nonsense. I laugh at people like that, thinking they are better because they dont go to the grocery store or they don't have one in their town. Please, I know your home might be expensive, your downtown may be ritzy and your car maybe $100,000K plus, but come one, it's a grocerty store that's how one survives. Food is food.
Come to think about it, the next time I was in New Canaan delivering something for a job to a resident, she complained that the item was the wrong thing, yet it was the only thing we sold and it said it on the contract. She proceded to go inside her home, and about 10 minutes later came outside and asked why we were still there in a mean voice. We told her she had our contract, and we needed to get paid.
One time a lady was really nice to me in downtown New Canaan though, so it's all relative. Some people are nice, some are just ignorant. Same can be said in Greewich, Bridgeport, Monroe, Danbury, New Fairfield, etc. It all depends who you are talking to, what time of day it is and what is going on in their lives.

The lady was just being rude to you. New Canaan has a few chain grocery stores; The Food Emporium, and Walter Stewart's Market, plus a few smaller stores (or markets, lol) Not too many years ago they also had A & P, and maybe even Grand Union? I am thinking way back. Some of the grocery stores do have "market" in their name, but she was being difficult.

Exactly.
Were you really looking for a grocery store, or were you just mocking the residents of New Canaan? People in town know the deal - they are not stupid. Someone rolling up on you, in a high school parking lot, asking to find the nearest grocery store would be somewhat shady to me. If they were asking for an ATM or a gas station, I'd feel differently. People don't just end up in New Canaan - they either know where they're going or know someone in town who can direct them.
A good friend of mine is a nanny in New Canaan going toward Vista, NY, and she tells me the amount of kids she notices on a daily basis driving around, smoking weed and looking at the big houses is out of hand. She said on Halloween, non-dressed up teenagers would come to the door trick or treating just so they can see the inside of the homes. That's what I mean when I say people in NC know the deal - how do I put this in a non-rude way?...they usually know whether or you live in town or you're just trotting around checking it out. She would slam the door in people's faces who were obviously not trick or treaters. Is that rude?
Disclaimer: I'm not saying you smoke pot.

They're down to 2. Food Emporium, which is actually much more of an A&P than a true Food Emporium, and Walter Stewart's(which used to have a store in Monroe). The Shaw's(previously Grand Union, i believe) was torn down and has been replaced by a Walgreens. Silvermine Market isn't a supermarket at all, it's a deli. A half mile over the line in Pound Ridge, there's Scott's Corner market. Most people just go to Norwalk for their groceries.

When I lived in NC we did all of our shopping in Wilton or Norwalk. Very rarely did we go to any of the "markets".
Oh, and we went to Stop & Shop, not the market.
