Howe Avenue is a major street and can be iffy depending on where the apartment is. Downtown Shelton seems to be improving so if it is near there it may be up and coming. Jay

I lived in Shelton for 5 years and loved it there. While we were there they built a new middle school and the town is really up and coming. I travel down that way every so often and have been pleasantly surprised at how much new development has occurred. You really almost do not have to leave the city for any of you needs. If there is something that Shelton does not have you are a hop skip and a jump from Ansonia, which will have whatever Shelton may not. You also have Griffin hospital in very near by Derby as well.
Howe Avenue, while not a "bad" section (really there aren't any "bad" sections of Shelton that I can think of) it IS a major road. If you have small kids it may not be the best situation for you. There is a very large apartment complex that is newly build in downtown Shelton, as well as many condo complexes in the city.
Good Luck

Response to Shelton Inquiry
I agree with the other responder that Howe Ave. can be iffy. As you drive out of the downtown area, there are a number of two and three family home rentals. And there are plenty of condo's. There are a number of new businesses springing up along Bridgeport Ave. which leads to the downtown area. Personally I wouldn't waste my time shopping in Ansonia. I lived there and couldn't wait to move out. Shelton probably has all you need. Also in Huntington which is really part of the Shelton area, there is a great bakery and activities on the town green. Shelton also has a wonderful library.

As another poster said, there aren't really any "bad" sections of Shelton. I grew up there (moved away in 1989). There is not much in the way of crime, especially not random street crime. Overall most of Shelton is very safe, including Howe Avenue, which is the part of Route 110 that runs through downtown Shelton. There is probably some drug activity and possibly some prostitution downtown, but nothing rampant.
The schools in Shelton are good, and there is plenty of shopping around town, especially on Bridgeport Avenue.

Shelton is becoming another bustling Fairfield County suburb - it's part of the Naugatuck Valley which is becoming a bedroom community for commuters to Norwalk and Stamford.
Howe Ave is a little shady but nothing to be scared of. Very little crime.
The poster who said you don't need to leave town for most of your needs is correct. You have restaurants and plenty of businesses on Bridgeport Ave. I see nothing but a positive future for Shelton.
