Hi, it´s been a while since i first posted here. We are a young family (well probably not that young anymore in the 30s and almost 4 kids) relocatog´ng to CT beginning of april. We are still looking for a rental house (ideally in Avon, Farmington, West Hartford, Glastonbury or similar) wth at least 4 brm. But actually I have another question: We are germans and my husband will have a working visa (work will be in Meriden), so what we will quickly need is a CT drivers licence and a saving account so we can quickly ge a real account with credit cards etc. How does both work out? We will come for a look and see end of jan, can we allready then do anything about it even though we don´t have the working visa then?
And if we move Beginning of april can the kids still start school/kindergarten before summer holidays or will they have to do their classes once more and start in september?
Still so many questions and su little time....
thanks
Natalie

This is from the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles website:

Natalie - You should still be able to enroll them in school for the remainder of the year. Schools here generally end in mid-June so they would have about 2 months in classes. It will also give them a chance to meet other children and make friends. As for opening checking, savings and credit card accounts, you could probably do that at any local bank. Bank of America is one of the largest banks in this country and should be able to help you. There are many branches here in Connecticut. Good luck and welcome. Jay

The DMV will permit you to drive for 12 months using an International Drivers' license or even a German license (considered out-of-state, valid for 30 days after you establish residence in CT). None of this will help in establishing a credit history, however (which is probably one of your prime objectives). Assuming your husband will be here on an H1B or similar work visa, I would recommend waiting until the visa is issued, obtaining a Social Security Nbr (SSN), then opening a regular savings account and applying for credit cards, driving license, etc. If you have an American Express card issued overseas, the process is quicker - Amex will issue a US-based card using your overseas credit history (Visa and MC will not do that).

It is theoretically possible to open a basic savings acct when you visit in end-Jan, but in the absence of a visa & SSN, you need to supply more paperwork, like a W-4 form, etc. This is usually not worth the effort, since credit bureaus will not receive any info without an SSN, and you will need to update all the documentation at the bank anyway, once your husband returns with his visa.

One other thing - in case your visa is an H4 (dependent), an SSN will not be available, so you need to get a letter from the nearest Social Security office mentioning your status, which can be handed in at the DMV when you apply for your own license.

About schools, I'm afraid I won't be much help... our son is less than a year old! Good luck.
