Smartasset has published a ranking of states with the best public education systems. Connecticut has been ranked No. 1. In fact, most of the states with the highest rankings are the higher cost-of-living states in the northeast while the lowest ranking are those in the low cost south. What a surprise. Jay

Great job with the list, exactly why I'm not relocating to San Diego. Unaffordable homes there compared to here with terrible schools.

There are a couple surprises on there:
California being so low.
Nebraska and Kansas being so high.
Mississippi beating out Vermont & Rhode Island? What? lol

Another good list CT takes top ranking in.

Always saw Vermont like a quarter step below NH. Surprised it wasn't on the list. Not surprised with the rest. Glad to see New England and overall, the Tri-State Area doing excellent.

On almost every list that ranks state educational systems, Vermont is top 5 or top 10. Not sure how it ranked so poorly here. Regardless, it is clear that New England states do exceedingly well at K-12 education.

Looks like there are also some states who spend a lot less per student and still have a high college attendance rate. Interesting. The AP rating criteria seems a little suspect.

I think California rates so low because there have been drastic cuts in education spending and the school districts tend to be large and poorly run (i.e. no accountability). That is what I like best about the northeast and particularly New England. There is a high expectation for learning here and even those who do not perform well in school (and I know more than few in that category) still walk away with a decent education. Jay

Yep, exactly what my co-workers in SD say, cuts, teacher layoffs, you name it.
