I would avoid all of Main St except the first part starting from Glastonbury line. Main St is shady at night. Although I think East Hartford has tried cleaning this area up in recent years.
Main St. turns into High for a brief moment heading south. Non-local traffic is supposed to follow the main road (which is arrowed) - that is Carter and will turn back into Main.

Shady areas - possibly the center of town but I am not down there at night much anymore. The area where Subway is near Pratt (bad trailer park back there). But honestly I've walked down to DQ from the south end and back. Never an issue going to the fireworks on bike but there's a lot of traffic then too. Isn't there a police substation near Pratt? Across the street?

Then again, now that Coke demolished that shopping plaza, that area doesn't fit the OP requirements for walking to drug and grocery stores anyway.

I would avoid the apartments on Carter for sure, based on the kids that overrun the Hockanum swimming pool each summer. But the houses in that area are fine. A bit south is even better, and the neighborhoods behind the Dollar Store (between Maple and Brewer) are fine. I have walked many of those streets at all hours with no issues (as a small woman).

Writing off a street that stretches for 8+ miles is silly, when much of the street is fine. That's what we're here for.

Would the pro's of Hartford outweigh the cons of it's crime stats? In other words, how big of a threat is it over East Hartford?

What do you consider the pros of Hartford? I'd never live there as I don't like cities and congestion in general, but it's different for everyone.

Default Wouldn't recommend moving to East Hartford-Dangerous & Expensive town

I'm only 5 feet tall, if that matters. Would choosing East Hartford be the right choice in terms of safety? Also, is the bus system in East Hartford any good? I know it can't be as good as it is in Hartford, obviously. Thanks.

There are plenty of places within walking distance to drugstores and grocery stores. There is a large percentage of small housing stock in town that would rent in your budget (older P&W housing). Eastern Brewer St would meet this criteria, not the section near Main St. Forbes would be fine for the most part too. Silver Lane towards Manchester is fine.
Silver Lane near Manchester is NOT fine! There is a ton of cruel, corrupt residents in that area. The drivers in that part of that town, run stop signs, i.e. Do NOT stop at Stop signs, hundreds of time on a daily basis, in the north end of East Hartford.
They are SO insistent you pick up dog feces immediately in that part of time, or they'll swear & scream at you, or THREATEN to call the police on you.
But DUE to that creepy Dog Feces Ordinance, there is NUMEROUS dangerous wild animals in that part of town, especially Deer, Coyotes, and even Raccoons, who often carry Rabies, which can kill you!
Meanwhile in the North end of Silver Lane, there are HUNDREDS of residents who are putting Toxic Pesticides on their lawns every week, which can get you VERY SICK if you walk on those toxic Properties, which is actually flowing into the CONNECTICUT Rivers, Lakes, and Long Island Sound.
I'm suggest Elmwood in West Hartford a lot more, or Wethersfield, or possibly Newington.

Lol Silver Lane near Manchester is not north. Main Street at South Windsor is north.

You are supposed to pick up after your dog at any time. Town irregardless. Not sure how picking up dog poop encourages "dangerous" animals.

And I will bet that people in the more expensive towns in the state are using many many more toxic pesticides due to more disposable income. You shouldn't be walking on people's properties anyway, which is probably why you are being yelled at to pick up after your dog.

One of the funniest CD posts I've read in awhile, but OP, please ignore.

We've found a good option in Hartford at 250 Main street. There's a few other places in Hartford we're looking at as well, but this is our top candidate so far. I don't walk at night very much, so how at risk would I be here?

That area is OK, but at night time it becomes a little shady. Also most buses will be stopping north of that location, so maybe a 5 minute walk to the buses.

That apt building does not have good reviews online.
250 Main Ratings, Reviews, Map, Rents, and other Hartford apartments for rent from ApartmentRatings.com

Bad reviews should be taken with a grain of salt, but when you see 50% or more reviews are bad out of 50 reviews, there's probably some validity to them.
