I grew up in Norwich and now live in North Carolina. There are some things I really like down here but a whole lot of things that **** me off. The schools suck and close for no damn reason at all in winter (it's too cold). Oh, and don't be fooled by the "lower cost of living" crap. This rope-a-dope governor and his crew are screwing the middle class with their tax games.
I would have loved for my children to grow up up north but it's probably to late at this point. They'll never know what they missed out on.

Houses are fairly cheap. Property taxes aren't bad. Sales tax is kind of high and they tax everything down here. Schools are sub-par. Colleges are pretty decent. Roads are outdated and people don't know how to drive.
All things considered it's not so bad. We take responsibility for educating our children so the schools aren't such an issue. Taxes are taxes. I just hate when people say it's so cheap to live down here. That's just wrong. Cheap is Alabama. You get what you pay for though.
Other than in Wake County (Raleigh, Cary) crime is an issue as well.
It's kind of like I can't go back but if I'd never left...............

This is what I have heard from several of my family members who left Connecticut too (they are not in NC though). People really need to research carefully before they make a move somewhere. Jay

i dont mean any disrespect by the term, there are a lot of townies, however its becoming more unrealistic to move back to FFC for a lot of people that grew up there unless u are making very good money. The whole economy crashing didnt do my generation a lot of favors. A lot of my friends have moved away to cheaper areas. I've also felt being from greenwich and living in stamford, a lot of people have stuck with their same social circles they grew up with, Nothing wrong with it, just what i had experienced. But i dont live in stamford anymore.

Because you'll never make enough money to come back. That's one reason why I don't want to move down south. I'd prefer higher wages and high taxes then low wages and low taxes. You can have more money in your pocket if you pay attention to what you pay for.

Oh I understand, I'm talking about the definition that I see many people put on it.

If I may share my opinion I miss up living up there as well, I'm ex military and I've lived in a few places, Germany and Washington State is the furthest I've ever been from the east coast, most of my upbringing was in Putnam /Northern Westchester part of New York and the Danbury area of Connecticut.

When I was 15 my parents decided to move to Florida so I've lived there too.

In 2005 wife graduates college, we relocated to Virginia and have yet to leave.

Virginia has some gorgeous scenery, amazing history, and some great colleges, Washington and Lee, Williams and Mary, UVA, VT, VCU, VMI, University of Richmond.

All though I had wanted to come back north myself at one point I know I can't anymore either, for one it has gotten too liberal up there but honestly the biggest reason is the cost of living is too high and my kids have lives here now and we have a grandbaby now so you just can't leave.

Connecticut has self-destructive voting habits and it's a shame that the Catholic church and other churches in the state have been in decline. The churches down south are strong, not just the born-again and baptists but even Catholic churches are very vibrant. Just looking at the weekly offerings you'll find a random Catholic church having collected $25,000 in its weekly offering. One of the Catholic churches in town collects more than $50,000 every week. In Norwich most churches collect a few thousand. The cathedral gets more than the others but it's still so low. People down here are willing and able to give more money to their church while living in nicer houses on a lower income than what they'd make in CT.

Religion and political stuff aside, I think CT is a better place to raise a family. CT has more culture, better history, more recreation, and it is closer to the big cities. Most people who moved down here from places like CT, NY, NJ, MI, or IL aren't planning to go back other than to visit family. They are happy with being able to afford a nice, newer home that they wouldn't be able to afford up north. I'm planning to move back and I can assure you that I'm in the minority. The north is losing some of its best people.

And what does the Catholic church do with all that money?
