Metro North provides service to cities other than NYC. NYC is not the end all be all destination.

I'd bet most Metro North riders in the morning rush get off the train in NYC. That's the nature of commuter rail pretty much anywhere.

Tell that to anyone who uses Boston commuter rail. 20 miles out is almost the 495 belt. In Boston, people use commuter rail from the 128 belt. I used to live in Winchester less than 10 miles outside of the city. Being able to walk to commuter rail with trains to North Station was a big deal. West Newton is a huge commuter rail stop. Weston. Needham.

On Long Island, people pay jillions to live in Great Neck so they have LIRR access to NY Penn. Manhasset is inside 20 miles. A ton of the NJ bridge/tunnel rats within 20 miles of Manhattan do rail to the Path/WTC or NY Penn.

We were discussing commuting to hartford. I think he was talking about 20 miles or more for small cities to suburbs commutes. Big city commutes are different obviously because of massive inner city congestion. If you work in hartford, there's really no good reason to be commuting from a long distance anyway. Plenty of towns available close by.

Yes, I was focusing on CT commutes.

20 miles out is pastoral. Plainville is 15 miles, Manchester 10. Glastonbury, Rocky Hill, Simsbury, Windsors — these are about 10 miles or less, and that’s where most commuters to Hartford come from.

20 miles is out into Granby, Vernon, Hebron. Even Canton is only 13 miles.

CtRail provides rail commuting to Hartford now. Also to New Haven. Shoreline East and Metro North also provide rail commutes to New Haven. Jay

Uhh... that is nine years of construction which is actually kind of long. The Q Bridge in New Haven took about 5 years. There is a BIG difference between building something new and rehabbing and expanding an existing highway. With completely new construction, you do not have to accommodate existing traffic which requires construction in phases. Plus Connecticut does not have $13 billion lying around waiting to be spent on a massive construction project. If it did, I would think they would jump at widening I-95 as soon as possible. Jay

Apples and oranges. I am sure China doesn't have public reviews we have, let alone environmental impact studies. And I am sure China doesn't have laws for reasonable compensation to private owners for eminent domain, or that such owners own land in some of the most expensive Real estate in the world. China probably killed a couple of rice fields; no big deal, and everybody kept their mouth shut.

I would take our system 1000 times over theirs.
