~25,000 people commute from Long Island to Westchester. ~20,000 go the other way.

That's a tiny user base for a multibillion-dollar tunnel.

And he wants to spend $5 million on just a study for it? I know better things he can do with that money.

What? Why would you want to turn Long Island Sound into a lake? Makes no sense. And yes the sound is used by thousands of commercial ships. There are major port facilities in Bridgeport, New Haven and New London as well as a couple smaller facilities in Norwalk and Stamford. They are pretty well known and do billions of dollars in business. Jay

Two thoughts on this:

1) Although it is supposedly strictly for Amtrak, could there be commuter possibilities?

2) Could a road one day be put on this tunnel? Could this finally be the elusive full Sound crossing?
There could be a commuter rail option added since Shoreline East runs on Amtrak owned tracks. I doubt Amtrak would be interested in adding a road to this. They are in the rail business and would not want to help steer customers away from their service. Still I doubt this will ever get anywhere. Too much opposition. Jay

I like the idea because it's interesting and exciting. Why not connect Long Island to the eastern part of CT, maybe it could become a hotbed of activity.

Looks like Westchester is heavily against the tunnel....
