Report: Connecticut Has Nation's Deadliest Rural Roads - Hartford Courant

Just thought I would share.

Honestly, I never thought CT rural roads were that bad. What the hell? I mean, I've seen some bad ones here and there, but I don't understand how this happens.

Yet overall Connecticut ranks 43rd for deaths per million miles driven (1.0 death per million miles). Data seems off especially in light of a higher concentration of rural roads.

Meh, I think we just have dumber drivers. You want to see a dangerous road, try driving from Reno to San Francisco via the back roads and secondary highways in late may during the spring melt.

Most dangerous drivers*

Has nothing to do with the roads. People drive on them like highways.

I agree. I lived in Alabama for six years and people would drive on shoddy two lane roads like they were the Autobahn.

I think this might have something to do with the definition of rural road being used. There are not a lot of roads in the state that meet the criteria of being outside a population center of 2,500 to 5,000. Seems a little off since like Wilton said we are 43rd for deaths per million miles traveled. Jay

That came up on my phone last night and I laughed. Compared to some mid-atlantic and southern states, our back roads are very tame with low speed limits.

Low speed limits does not mean low speed drivers.

I've always found CT's rural roads to be more narrow and lacking shoulders in comparison to others states that I've lived. Not sure if it's because the infrastructure is older or just because its not been improved/widened through the years. Obviously, the combo of hills, turns, and dense forest does not help visibility. I can't say I'm totally shocked by this.
