East Granby is, IMO, one of the nicer town left in this state. A great place for families. Yes, Granby, Simsbury, Avon... those are nice too, but what EG lacks is the attitude and competitiveness of the aforementioned places. Sure, there is no "real" down town here, and there is no grocery store but it is a very quick ride to several supermarkets, shopping, wonderful small local restaurants AND franchise eateries... not to mention a quick drive to Rte 75 (Windsor Locks) where there are lots of places behind the airport. Schools are small, but growing (not yet sure if that will be good or bad in the long run, taxes and increasing home production/town population??). There are some activities for families run through the Family Resource Ctr/Board of Ed (even younger-than-school-age kids), things like Little League and a great music program in the school system. For the most part I found people to be friendly, although there seemed to be a "new generation" of yuppie families moving in and that will, ultimately, change the direction the town goes in the future.
To answer the original question , it really depends where you live but if you find the home of your dreams and fall in love with EG.... I suspect that after a few nights home you will hardly even notice the airplane noises. Unless of course you are trying to have a phone conversation while you are outside... THEN you may have to put the caller on hold while the plane passes overhead . Good luck!
ETA: To clarify, Granby is beautiful and forth-coming as well. TONS of programs and activities for families and just a beautiful place to be-- still retaining it's agricultural roots. However, IMO, and it is JUST MY OPINION, EG is a bit slower-paced and less quick to expand. I would choose Granby over Avon/Simsbury in a heartbeat! Also, the Farmington Valley YMCA is just over the EG/Granby border and open to all residents in surrounding towns-- they offer excellent programs and activities all year long for all ages child to adult. Check it out!

I hope this doesn't happen, one of the main reasons we want to move there is due the smallness of it, were not looking for somewhere that judges you on what car you drive or what size of home you have or what school your kids go to, if i did i would stay here in CA lol.
We really like what we have read so far about East Granby and are looking to visit in March to make a finale decision.
Thank you so much for all this great info!

Best of luck during your March visit. EG or Granby - you really can't go wrong and I agree 100% with the other posts on this thread. This is a great place to live, and in EG, you really are close to many things without being caught up in a pretentious, snooty town like Avon or Simbury where the kids are in constant competition with each other.

Planes rarely land or take off at night at BDL (the airport code). You may get the ocassional cargo plane taking off after midnight or landing before 5am, but mainly the cargo operations happen between 9pm-10pm and 5am-8am.
Overall BDL has around 365 take off's and landings per day with not much activity from 11pm-6am. Sleeping should not be a problem unless you go to bed very early, and even then the planes would mainly be landing and not taking off.

We have also done alot of research on alot of towns in CT and are aware that Granby and East Granby and are too different towns, hence the title of the OP 'East Granby' not 'Granby'.

Yes, yes, no airplane noise is all fine and dandy, but when you have children it is the school systems that really matter. My advise is to check out the states public records on state given academic tests between Granby and East Granby. There is quite a difference. But that's just my 2 cents, seeing that I have lived in both towns.

Oh, and Granby is misrepresented as a "snooty" town. We do have our fair share, but so does EG for its size. The simple fact is that we left because the school systems lacked the care for the children like Granby does, and a little competitiveness never killed anyone. Granby prepared my children in 4 years of being in their system than EG did in 8 years.

I have to agree with you about Granby not being "snooty". I found it to be among the friendliest in the state. I would have cnsidered moving there if my job wasn't so far away. Jay

We have lived in EG for 3 years west of Metacomit ridge. There is nil noise from the airport because of the ridge. I know you were posting about buying a new construction home in EG, there is alot of new construction going on around the center of town and there you will be subject to noise from the airport. There is one area of new construction going on west of the ridge but there are only three houses and no new ones have gone up since we moved to town (they start around $500K). There is a very nice neighborhood west of the ridge off of the golf course, the street is Country Club Ln. Occasionally a house goes for sale in here. Lots of kids, annual block party, lots of wildlife at your backdoor, and the houses are all newer (mid 1990's and newer). Hope this is informational.

I just read the post about the school system in EG vs. Granby. EG has a fantastic school system with virtually no difference other than class size. EG also does a great deal for the preschool age children with tons of programs. Sneaker Camp offered in the summer always attracts many kids from the surrounding towns, including Granby.
