While I won't say Pepe's is not good pizza, I'd much prefer a Modern Pie. Glad you got to try it though. The rude staff is something I can't get over and the way they rush and push you out is just unpleasant. I know they are busy and well known but it's annoying. At least at Modern you can sit, get your pie, relax a bit, etc.

We used to go to Sally's before the woman passed but stopped after one really bad experience where our pie must have been made with sauce from the bottom of the pot because it was disgusting. Still a Modern faithful.

We thought Modern was great too. We didn't encounter anyone rude at Pepes but it was only our first time. Probably wont be making a habit of going.....I hate crowds and long lines and no way am I waiting on a long line for Pizza. Glad we tried it though.

How is the one next door? Abates?

When we visit, we usually go for lunch. No crowds and no lines!

I think there is a commercial running that says Pepe's is opening a location in Mass. Don't remember the town name though.

I also concur with the rude service at Pepe's at the Mohegan Sun location. The West Hartford location had OK service, but it was very rushed. The cups, plates, and silver ware were also very sub par. May seem like a strange thing to complain about, but when I see stuff like that, it implies the owners are cheap. Decent cups & plates do not cost much for a restaurant. Those plastic cups and plates will only look good for a few weeks before they start getting cloudy and show all the scratches.

I would actually prefer paper plates to that plastic junk.

Boston neighborhood: Chestnut Hill.

It was supposed to be in Brookline, but that fell through, and they went with Chestnut Hill.

Pepe's in West Hartford and Manchester both have excellent, friendly service. New Haven, won't go back.

Modern is my New Haven spot of choice.

Sally's - went once, great pizza, also rude staff.

So many great pizza places in the area. I'm spoiled.

Pepe's is very good- the one in Manchester- never been to the store in NH. I like my crust just a tad thicker, not much though. Antonio's in downtown Rockville is IMO better. The red sauces are outstanding- the toppings excellent. I have taken several guests there- they all said it was excellent. Gino the owner is from Naples, Italy.

Thanks for the tip on Antonio's. May have to give it a try.

I grew up going to Modern and it's still my favorite, but if I had to do Pepe's, the original location wins just for being located next to Libby's. So many cannolis.

I think that goes back to when it was a neighborhood joint. They have always had plastic plates and glasses. Doesn't bother me. Jay

That's their 2nd non-CT location, right? The other one being in Yonkers, NY.

The Yonkers one often has good crowds, but a lot of people around there pan the place because the pizza is (obviously) a different style than the "New York" pizza people are used to in that (my) neck of the woods...

I like it, just think it's a bit overpriced for what they give you.....when I was in college my roommate's sister went to Yale and when we visited her on occasion we went to Sally's a lot.
