So we've decided on Burlington!!
So we have decided on buying a home in Burlington because of the proximity to DH's work mostly and the good school system.
I have never even been to Burlington at this point (as we have not looked at the homes on our list yet).
So does anyone live their? What things are in town? What do i have to go out of town for?
I'm pretty sure its mostly a rural town. Any decent parks/playgrounds as i have young kids. Is it mostly families who live their?

Burlington is a pretty rural town. The center has a few small stores, gas station and a pharmacy. For pretty much everything you will need to travel. the closest supermarkets are in Bristol (Route 6), Canton (Route 44) or Unionville (Route 4). Stop & Shop is building a new store to replace the small one they have on Farmington Avenue (Route 4) in Unionville that will be great. It should open later this year.
There are many nice areas and beautiful home in Burlington. I know a couple of people that live there and love it. One friend though has a problem with a neighobor who keeps chickens. They chickens were let to run free and would walk over to my neighbors lawn and destroy it. It was an on going battle for a couple of years. Keep in mind that this was not in a farm area but an upscale subdivision. Eventually the neighbor cooped the chickens. Anyway, despite this problem they love it there. Hope this helps. Jay

I look at Burlington as one of those very active family oriented type exurbs. Basically all shopping will be outside of town...but nothing is too far!

This is true. Bulington is not a RURAL town - it is classified as suburban but has a very woodsy feel with homes being on multi-acre lots. It is not far from civilization - Hartford is a 25 minute drive, Bristol (with plenty of shopping, dining, etc) is next door and you can take advantage of the amenities Avon has to offer without paying the high prices.
Family of mine lives in Burlington - moved there over 10 years ago with a modest income and has stayed in their first Burlington home as their fortunes improved. People I have met in town and from what my family has told me, the town is very friendly and family oriented.
"Downtown Burlington" consists of a Cumberland Farms, Dunkin Donuts, a video store and CVS. It is 'rural' in that sense, but not rural like upstate NY or Maine.
You will enjoy what the small town has to offer. Welcome!

decided...
I disagree with the idea that burlington is friendly. Well let me rephrase that, it's friendly if you can afford to live in a 3500 sq foot home.
I have met people that were very friendly until they found out our house is not a "mini-mansion" ( a term I'd never heard until moving here. I grew up in Greenwich, CT so i know what big houses look like and I never met anyone that looked down on my family for growing up blue collar. We are very friendly people and really try to meet new people, I can honestly say that we are selling our house and moving to Ma., to get our kids away from the "more money you have the moreimportant you are!" attitude.

I live in Burlington, I have to say I do like it.. I'm only here half the time other half is spent on campus. Anyway, you aren't far from avon/farmington/bristol so you have plenty of choices to shop/dine/ent. that aren't very far at all.
The people are nice, I haven't meant any rude people like the poster earlier mentioned...

the same is for alot of towns though.. i found it in newhartford too.. i am in winchester and i was at a beach in newhartford and heard from other people that if your not from there the town people snub you.. and i was so snubbed. i was talking to a mom and then she asked if i was from newhartford and i said no.. she just basically turned away and started talking to someone else. burlington, harwinton and newhartford seem to be the desirable areas to live. sad they have to be so clicky
