Commute to Wilton
I am relocating to Connecticut for work and my family is trying to figure out commute times from various cities/towns to Wilton. I have heard that driving against the regular flow of traffic (into NYC in am, and out in pm) is a breeze but as it stands, we are most interested in living in Westport, Fairfield, or Norwalk. Any feedback on travel times to the town center of Wilton is much appreciated. I think major expressways can be avoided but was curious what the backroads such as highway 7 or 33 are like around rush hour. Thanks.

Hate to say this but Fairfield could take you 40 mins to get to Wilton.
Why not Wilton itself?
Westport is very expensive but great.
Norwalk is nice in parts, touch and go in others...

Thanks
Thanks for the reply. We like Wilton but noticed that there were not many places for rent. Although we hope to be in the area longterm, we thought it was best to rent in year one to make sure we pick the "right" fit for us. Norwalk, Westport, and Fairfield had more rental options. It seems like the westside of Fairfield is pretty close to Westport (off of post road). Is that still a 40 minute commute into the heart of Wilton during rush hour? I thought it was possible to take Post Road up to Wilton Road?

Hi, I work in Wilton and have colleagues here who live in all 3 towns, Westport, Faitfield & Norwalk. If you have realistic options available in all these places, I'd go with Westport, since you can avoid busy roads altogether, during your commute - you only need a combination of Rte 33 and/or some inner roads. Fairfield could take upto 30-35 min every morning, depending on where you live and what time you leave home. Norwalk would be my last choice, based on the routes & congestion. Also, if you're considering East Norwalk (which is considered to have the better parts of town) , you're going to be further away.

Thanks
Just to clarify, living in the heart of Westport (Main Street) will save me that much time over living off of Post Road (near Borders) in Fairfield? Is the commute down Post Road intolerable during rush hour. It didn't seem that far when I casually drove it on a Saturday.

Depending on the time of day, traveling on the Post Road can be unbearable. Driving up Route 33 from downtown Westport up to Wilton can be slow depending on the time of day as well, but really isn't that bad.

Wilton is the choice?
So is everyone suggesting that I try to rent in Wilton. It seems that traffic can be issue even coming from neighboring towns. Where else would you suggest we look to rent if I will be commuting daily to Wilton's town center?

Rent in Norwalk or in Wilton Center. Depending where you end up renting in Norwalk, there should be back roads that you can take to avoid Route 7.

Amazing that this post has started just now... I too am moving to the Wilton area for a job. I'm going through the exact same struggles trying to find affordable housing to rent that is within a reasonable commute. I have read all the info everyone has posted above and it seems very helpful. if anyone can add to it or recommend a realtor or anything in the area to help my search it would be greatly appreciated. I have only begun my search but need to relocate in 2-3 weeks so my time table is very short, any help would be greatly appreciated. ALSO: If The rozman, finds something and has any info to share with someone a few days/weeks behind you in the process, please share anything you can. This task seems rather daunting and you may already know from experience. Thanks in advance for all the help. much appreciated.
