Schools? Racism?
We are looking to relocate to Ct from NYC. So far we like New Milford, Woodbury and Newtown. My husband is African American and I am Latina. We have two kids 5 and 9 yrs old. We picked these towns is because they have good schoolsand are only about 90 min to NYC. I was wondering if I should be concerned about racism. Thank you and please be blunt as I want to be fully aware what I'm walkng into.

The towns you have mentioned are generally white- with a sprinkling of AA, Asians, Latino, Gays/Lesbians etc--These towns are relatively rural, except for New Milford, which has over 30,000 people.
Racism may exist everywhere- and I can understand your concerns on this issue. Connecticut is a largely tolerant state- I am sure you will find these towns welcoming and unconcerned about your race or ethnicity. Best thing to do is spend some time in each location- and get the 'vibe' of the town. Best of luck and welcome.

This is very true.
Friends of mine, a biracial couple (him black and her white) recently moved to CT from Portland OR with their three kids - they were delightfully surprised at how accepting people in New Milford are. People here don't care about the color of your skin, sexual orientation or accent. The vast majority of people here live and let live, and condemn any kind of racism.
I'd highly suggest New Milford. It's a nice New England town. It's a mix of middle class NASCAR like fans and upscale, martini drinking financials. Good schools, easy access to NYC and reasonable housing costs (for the area) are all definitely a plus. Gaylordsville (Northern NM) is more working class and rural.
If you have anymore questions, I'd be happy to ask my friends. Feel free to PM me or post here on the boards.

Connecticut has a "White Guilt Complex". Many communities in the state are acutely aware of their lack of diversity, and therefore make their best efforts to be accomadating to people of all walks of life.
It's a little bit funny but largely quite true.
Avoid Plainfield however. They have some kind of Aryan Nation wanna-be teenager gang of white trash running around. Recently, a black student was beaten by a "gang" called "K Nation". Clearly a hate crime and racially motivated, but the Plainfield police are quite unmotivated when it comes to charging anybody with this crime.

I wouldn't worry about it. Depending where you go you may not even be much of a minority. I live in Norwalk & its very racially diverse as are most other places in CT to differing degrees.

Although Manchester may be a bit farther than you would like, one of the reason that I moved here was for that reason. You can usually tell the socail "climate" of a town by watching there teenagers. I found everything from the white upper class yuppy type all that way down the spectrum (if there is such a thing) to what the kids calll Goth. When I was a teenager there wer basic teenage classes such as the "jock" "nerds" and "burnouts". Buth now there are goths, jocks, skaters, jocks, geeks, and the list is endless. My teenagers speak freely of homosexual relationships in there school, so to them biracial realtionships are far from unusual.

How far are Milford and new milford from each other? We don't have children, so schools don't matter to us. We like what we are hearing about Milford and wondered if New Milford was close in any way...

New Milford and Milford are easily an hour apart.
I'd like to second what Tizz said about white guilt. VERY few people I've come across in CT are actually racists. Almost all of them, however, are inexperienced in dealing with people who aren't white. But most people are accomodating and will probably go out of their way to make you feel at ease. People may stare at you, but they won't look down on you for being a minority/multiracial couple.
Also, FYI Newtown in NOT 90 minutes from midtown. It is easily 110+ minutes.

Both towns are located on the Housatonic River. Milford is a coastal city in southwestern New Haven County. New Milford is an inland town located in Litchfield County. New Milford was settled by people from Milford, hence the name. They are about 45 miles apart which would be an hour drive. Jay
