Suffield is a great town. Un crowded, rural yet conveniently located between Hartford and Springfield.

Lots of towns west of the Connecticut river and east of the river. Many good suggestions thus far. Median home price in the greater Hartford area is around 215K- though some of the more 'Toney' towns will be 250-300K- which is still a bargain to many areas of California.

If in Bloomfield- the drive on I 291 across the Connecticut river gives easy access to South Windsor- a semi suburban town

Hartford is def cheaper than CA but the "tony" towns outside the city all have median sales prices of above $300k...

It will buy you a condo in/around LA and SD. It will also buy you quite the home the further inland you go. A good friend just moved to Palm Springs and closed on a nice sprawling ranch with a pool for $305k.

considering the drought in California along with increasing heat due to climate change Palm Springs would be too hot for my blood. at 350K its hardly a bargain under these environmental circumstances.

Not just Palm Springs, was just using that as an example - almost everywhere in CA, it gets cheaper as you go inland.

Since no need for schools, she could also consider parts of Bloomfield. Much more house for money in the towns with undesirable schools. Op, u should also consider access to supermkts. Some rural areas are not convenient to shoppinh.

well inland California is cheaper then the coastal 'mecca' cities of the San Francisco Bay area- this includes the north bay- Sonoma and Napa counties- the east Bay of Walnut Creek, Berkeley- and the south Bay- Sunnyvale, San Jose.

but also Los Angeles county. Ventura, and Santa Barbara- last but not least San Diego.

Sacramento is higher then Hartford county for median home price- while some of the other cities are near Hartford for costs in the San Joaquin valley -

There are nearly 40 million people in California- more then 80% of them live in a geographic area that is considered 'sub humid'-- not enough water. This was true before climate change- in years to come it is likely to become warmer and drier.

On a data driven note- C02 next year will likely stay above 400ppm most of the year this has not been seen in the geologic records for more then 4 million years or more- and in 2017 be above that level all year. By the way Connecticut this year is more then 5 inches below the historical norm for precipitation- in this region of the country there will be droughts then heavy rains- another by product of climate change.
