Hey guys! I was hoping to get some insight into these two places. My husband and I want to move to the area- he has a job in NYC, so we don't want to move too far out to make the commute too long for him. We want to buy a starter home in either Stamford or Norwalk. We don't care about school districts too much, as we plan to move out to better school-district areas once we have kids that are old enough for schools, so thats not a factor. For us, its all about being able to re-sell the home when the time comes.

Obviously barring housing crashes and all that, for the 450-575k range, which town do you guys see/know having a better resell value? As a starter home, it would probably be a smaller home, 3 bed, 2 bath (thats what we are looking for at least).

Either Stamford or Norwalk would be fine but I would have to give Stamford a slight edge due to it being closer to New York City and being bigger. That said Norwalk is a close second so you really can't go wrong with either. Since they are both cities though, I would be very careful to select a home in one of their better neighborhoods. Jay

Overall - Stamford. Just with the NYC commute alone I would go with Stamford. Its also closer to NYC and has better schools and lower taxes, all of which will help resale.

Agree with Stamford as it's obviously closer. To say schools are better in one vs the other is knit picking.
Both have nearly identical mill rates for Prop taxes.
I would say your budget is in a very comfortable range for resale in both, not a problem for a well kept and updated home, certain areas will sell faster. I've sold two properties in Norwalk at profit, both in well under a month, and one in a down market.
The worst areas in either are small, and irrelevant for your price range.

Stamford for the commute (express trains to NY and Amtrak stop), the amenities, the re-sale. Manage your expectations with your budget...you're moving to one of the priciest areas of the country. But you'll get it back and more...

Stamford for the commute. And if you get stuck there, don't fret. The schools in Stamford are good.

Stamford. I like it better as a city personally, and you're closer to NYC.

Stamford schools are good, unless you are the type of parent that leave your children to their own devices.
