Enfield, Manchester, Bristol, Norwich, New London, Waterbury, Vernon, East Hartford, Middletown, Willimantic, Wethersfield, Newington, and even some parts of Hartford and West Hartford. Most of these cities have undesirable areas, but some parts are nice as well. I wouldn't call any city completely ghetto. New Britian is probably the closest to that, though. I'd avoid the North end of Hartford (mostly ghetto, and the part that's nice is unaffordable). East Hartford, Waterbury and Willimantic are being improved. I think Stamford and the rest of Fairfield county has dropped off the "affordable" list at this point.

Also check for Bushnell towers downtown. These are private condos but sometimes people have them for lease. Park Place towers is another option but not right downtown and not the best area IMO, not bad though.
Something else to check out is on the East Hartford side of the river. There is a 15-18 floor condo tower, I believe these are rentals but they may have some condos in there as well. These would be a short walk over the Connecticut river, 10 minutes max. |

The condos on the east hartford side are condos not rentals as they command a premium price for the area it is unlikley that too many are rented out.

I guess they are condo only, but if you do a search you can get a great deal on a condo there. I always though they were real expensive but I found a 2 bedroom with updated kitchen for only 249k. A 3 bedroom is 350k.
When I move back to Connecticut I sure hope they are the same price. This would be ideal. Walking distance to downtown, safe and secure, and good highway access to Manchester for shopping. |

249K for that area is expensive which is why i said they are a premium price for the area. although not neccessarily for the complex.

I'm trying to remember where Stepny place was and I can't recall at the moment. Rocky Hill does have Century Hills which does have the 'Towers' which are somewhat hi-rise. It used to be a nice place to live and I had several friends that lived there, however I'm unaware if it still is. You should definitely check it out though. If your looking for City hi-rise, I would defintely stick to Downtown Hartford or West Harford. There aren't many hi-rises, but an ex-boyfriend of mine lived in a building that had about 5-10 floors and it was pretty nice, on the very edge of Hartford, but was West Harford, a nice area... If I remember correctly, it was on Woodland Street near the corner of Farmington Avenue.
Stay away from the North End, definitely NOT where you want to be. 50+ years ago it was the nicest place to live in Hartford (My Mother grew up on Edgewood Street) however now it is the 'ghetto'.. |

Stepny Place is on Silas Deane right off I91. It seems fairly nice, but no W/D in unit and the parking is not covered. Elms Common seems to have covered parking, but the ratings on aptratings.com are mixed for all the buildings...

Not sure if the OP is even still reading these, but if you are looking for a nice place to rent that isn't too expensive - check out Baldwin Court in Newington. I moved from there when i got married, but loved the 3 years that I lived there. You probably won't find too much info on line since this is a small complex and when i lived there demand was high so they really didn't need to advertise (i was #14 on a waiting list at the time). I believe a 2 bedroom is now going for about 1K per month - it was 840 when I lived there. The complex is part of Cambridge Management so you might find more info on that company if you do a search and you'll find the number to call if you are interested. it located in a very residential area right of the berlin turnpike surrounded by single family homes and condos. Each unit has either a deck or patio, 2 bedrooms, 2 bath, washer/dryer hookups a fireplace and central air. Kitchens are galley style, but I always had enough space and the utility room where the washer and dryer would go has space for shelves if you need more storage. The larger bedroom has its own bath and walk in closet. Seperate entrances for each unit. No covered parking, but assigned spaces. the units and landscaping where well maintained when I lived there. Access to shopping, highways, etc was easy because the berlin turpike was only a few streets away.

How is snow removal at these places? I'm in Minnesota now (so most parking is covered) Any way to tell how good it is?
