It's certainly not fair to compare it to boston or NYC, but the real question is "WHY is NH, the city of Yale University, only 130k?" Why is NH/CT not making greater efforts to keep the graduates from Yale here? These students take their education to NYC, boston, silicon valley, sand diego, and more recently dozens of other cities. New Haven (and Yale) have been around since colonial times. If it was ever going to be something great, it would've been so by now. A few little incubator companies from UConn and Yale aren't going to attract talent by the thousands, that's for sure. It's unfortunate, but I think New Haven, which is arguably our best city for attracting young talent, is as good as it's gonna get.
I think a lot of business and politicians feel the need to not attract graduates or push research. The only person I saw do this was the CEO of Western CT Health Network building a huge brand new medical research unit.

Still CT has the potential to be a place where engineers, IT, new Doctor's, and medical researchers could flourish, but they don't. CT pushes away a lot of this, cuts funding, and many rely on the economy of new Blue Collar job's like tech stores and fast food restaurants.

The Hartford/Albany comparison is a good one. And similarly, New Haven has always felt like Rochester to me in many ways.

CT does not want to be associated with the qualities that some of its cities are known for. There is a lot of grit in small cities like New Britain, Meriden, Torrington, and Waterbury... but CT strongly values its NYC shadow and its New England charm - no space for anything less polished.

41 sights in Providence? I don't think so. Not even close. Half at best. Jay

I do feel this way! The state lacks allot to keep the youth entertained. I have said that for ages and will keep repeating it unless something changes. I think New Haven and Stamford are about the only decent cities in the state, Hartford still has allot to improve on.

State should focus on one city every 10 or 15 year's. Pour money to bring in tourist, lower crime, increase jobs, improve development, improve school's, improve traffic flow, and improve housing.

State only has 4 real cities, too small to be ridiculously compared to other major cities around the country, and not sure why some on here expect so much from them.

Hartford - nice place to visit for a few things, then go home.
New Haven - nice place to go to college or have a nice dinner-drinks, then go home.
Bridgeport - nice place to have a nice steak dinner downtown, buy a fishing pole or some hunting gear, then go home.
Stamford - nice place to work, then go home.

It's mainly because of population, as many posters have already pointed out.

Even Providence has 178,000 people, far more than CT's largest city.

If the cities are to become more vibrant than they will need to attract thousands more younger professionals.

Stamford has a chance in coming years as it continues to redevelop and it's proximity to NY.

New Haven maybe because of Yale. Yale has an enormous endowment and can easily dump more of it into the city.

The others... probably not. It will likely take decades
