Possibly. I'm just comparing comparable NY and CT towns. Carmel is comparable to my town and other Danbury area towns. Property taxes in the Danbury area towns will always be less than the Putnam County NY towns

Not even close. There is a raised ranch on listed Oliver Street in Bridgeport for $196,900 and the taxes are under $8,000. I would guess Hartford, Waterbury, and New Britain are similar for that style house. Jay

To answer some questions: Westchester taxes are terrible. My boss lives in Rye and pays something like, $18,000 per year for a modest 3 bedroom split level. Even White Plains is pretty high which is surprising with all the businesses and industry. Greenwich taxes are definitely lower, but we have had issues with our home renovation and possible contractor sabotage which resulted in our septic tank backing up into our lower level twice (original tiles and parts of the toilet were found in output pipe after they excavated our backyard and replaced pipe)....now we can't even seem to get a HELOC which we so desperately need because a our money is tied up in the house. This has been a renovation from hell. I could go on and on, I seriously could write a book. I'm in such despair over all of this.

Anyway, Danbury area probably would be a better option because my commute would suck from Shelton. Husband's commute to Stamford would not be easy from Danbury, but I guess it's do-able.

Thank you again for all your wise advice. I would of course prefer to stay put, this has the potential to be an amazing house
If we could just get out from under the debt we are in now due to all our unfortunate circumstances. And finish fixing up the lower level after the horribleness of literally having crap everywhere.
So sorry your are going through this.. To answer your question succinctly.. Without opinion re other choices.. It wouldn't be too too terribly crazy to consider Shelton. If you are drowning in expenses and just want to sell/walk away from the debt. Then yes, Shelton is a perfectly wonderful town. 😀

Also not even close. Even with towns with the highest taxes, a home for that amount would have taxes about $10,000. In Bridgeport one house at that price had taxes under $9,000. There was also a house on Lake Forest that had $12,000 for taxes but it was only that high because it is waterfront. Jay

I could be wrong. If a house was $300K you times it by 50 mill rate, brlieve rate in the Bury, and divide by a 1,000. Is this the way you find out how much tax is to be owed on a property?

Taxes go by a homes assessed value which may or may not correspond to the selling price. The only true way to know is to look at the taxes being paid on actual homes. That gives you the true taxes to expect. Jay

For the Danbury area you'll be paying around $6k for a $300k house.
