Wedges are called grinders in Fairfield County. Jay
Not an expert on this, but I'd say a bit of both. Wedges are more of a "NYC/Westchester" word and "grinders" more of a "Hartford and rest of New England" word. I tend to hear both in my travails, hearing "wedges more often west of a Danbury-to-Norwalk line, and "grinders" more east of it (i.e. in Bridgeport).
Some of the words are more "regional" and make sense to people from Westchester too (i.e. Stew Leonard's though only in more recent times when it was more promoted and they opened one there, Greenwich, the Merritt (as in "not always the better way if you wanted to go to Stamford or Norwalk from where you live" at least that was mine and others thoughts on it when I was less involved in CT and still knew of it), Metro-North, Seasons, the City, the Sound).
Sorry but I grew up in Fairfield and we NEVER called it a wedge. And I know no one that does. It may be a spillover from Westchester into Greenwich and part of Stamford but never heard it north of there. Even much of Stamford calls it a grinder to my knowledge. Jay
I grew up in FFLD County and we used grinders or sub. Everyone around me now uses grinders. Additionally, most of my NY coworkers call it a grinder, as well.
But, everything else makes sense to me. I actually posted this to my FB last night. And my dad is a Prep boy...lol

We would also use the term "sub". Remember the world's largest restaurant chain, Subway, was founded in Bridgeport 50 years ago as Pete's Sub Shop. Jay
The mini-debate on wedges/grinders/subs reminds me of this place in Stamford, behind the Dairy Queen.
I've been in there only once. lol
Does anyone knows for how long have these guys been in business?
