Default Re-location

I am currently living in England and have done for the last 18 years, am originally from Perth, Western Australia.

This summer I am being re-located to the States with my job.

I will need to be based on the east coast and will be travelling a lot to Georgia, Illinois, Texas, New York City, Florida and within Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

I was in MA last summer on holiday and loved Boston, could definately see myself living there but would love some advice on areas that would be suitable.

I am single, 37 and would enjoy being in an area that is safe and where I can meet new people, have easy access to a gym, airport, train station and good supermarkets.

My company would love me to be in an area that is in closer commutable distance to Manhattan (ie Connecticut) but as I have never been to this state, I have no idea what to expect.

Can anyone please give me some information on CT, RI and good areas around Boston?

Many thanks

Melissa

I've moved your thread to the CT Forum. CT is indeed closest to Manhattan and the easiest for commuting.

I hope you'll find some good answers here. Years ago I commuted, irregularly from CT to NYC on the Metroliner (out of Brewster, NY) station and found it acceptable from where I lived in Sherman, CT (a small town and not far from the NY border, and larger towns, including Danbury, CT).

I love CT!

Good luck with your move and new position.

The area in Connecticut closest to New York City will be Fairfield county. There are many attractive towns offering the kind of lifestyle you described in your original post.

Stamford is more of an urban environment, but is very attractive, with great shopping, restaurants, culture and other amenities. Greenwich CT offers a lifestyle that renowned, but at a price that is also renowned, Other towns to consider nearby are Westport, New Canaan and Fairfield.

These towns offer easy access into NYC city, with Greenwich, then Stamford being the closest-45 minutes.

Danbury is a great area. We have a train station in town, but your best bet is to take the train from Brewster NY, just over the CT/NY border. There is shopping, restaurants, theatres (plays and outdoor music venues) and will be hosting our first Connecticut Film Festival in May. Molly Darcy's shows English Footbal and Rugby if you are into sportsl Good luck.
My husbands sister lives in London....if you have any questions about where to go out.....let us know!

Ah, My wife is Australian, but from Sydney several thousand miles from Perth. Her parents (father Irish - mother English) went back to the UK when she was 7 and lived there until she met me. I stole her away however she couldn't take the UK weather anymore. Why did her parents leave Aussie to go back to UK: I can not figure????? She went to school in York (mother lives there, but was from Reading) My wife went to Leister (Nene College) University and graduate at Liverpool Univ.

As a single woman in her 30's going to NYC stay in either Stamford or Norwalk in CT or White Plains in NY. They are small cities with somewhat of a night life (bars close at 2 in CT while NY it is 4:00 AM and NYC - well never just find and after hours like me in my college days: out at 7 and in by sunrise). Norwalk and Stamford have numerous gyms. Norwalk I worked out in Golds and Body Dynamo (but I was a competitive strength lifter) They all have about 4-7 gyms in each 3 towns. All three have great train stations to NYC and Stamford has Amtrack
