Back a few weeks ago, I thought I was set on Syracuse University. But a lot has changed since then. I went on a second visit after I was accepted, and that visit didn't go as well as expected. I am still considering Syracuse, but it is not a lock at this point. I am bringing up UCONN back in my discussion. The only things holding me back from UCONN is out of state tuition and reputation.

ICYWW, I am also probably to apply to two other schools: Iowa State and University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Iowa State has the best computer science program, and a well respected one in the country. I believe Iowa State University also was where the first computer was invented. The University of Minnesota Twin Cities also has a good computer science program. Minnesota also is one of the best schools. I am not sure which school is superior though between Syracuse and Minnesota.

I am bringing back UCONN because of the school itself. I still have until April 1st to apply and possibly get accepted for Iowa State and Minnesota.

If you were in my shoes, which school would you want to go to from my list?

Thats a tough question since we don't know enough about your situation such as financial situation, social and even your family situation...

These all play a part - UCONN/Syracuse - big party schools but great schools overall. UCONN gives you the instate tuition discount (no idea if its even much) and being at UCONN keeps you close to your family (could be good or bad, depending on your situation).

I don't know much about the other two schools, but if the above isn't an issue (and lets face it, any school can be a party school) then I would def go for University of Iowa if it has the BEST compsci program if thats what you are going for - why not go for the best?

Now if you aren't 100% sold on computer science then maybe pick a school that has a good program but also has good alternative programs as well so if it doesn't work out you have options instead of having to transfer...

Any way you go - good luck!!

Why do you keep questioning your choice and bringing in other schools? Stop second guessing yourself. Syracuse is a great school and closer to your home than the others. You will get a good education there. The other schools are no where near where your family is, so forget coming home for a weekend or shorter holidays. Have you even checked how hard or expensive it is to travel between these schools and your home? Plus I highly doubt the other schools offer any significant advantage to your career. Stick with what you decided. Jay

I have an interesting perspective on this as an alumnus of the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. At the same time I have a child who has been accepted to that school, Syracuse, and UConn. Minnesota is great in terms of graduate education and research $ (routinely ranks in the top 20) but I wouldn't recommend it for undergraduate education. Even though Mpls/St. Paul are great in terms of livability, the U is very much of a commuter campus. 60+% of the undergrads students are from the Twin Cities and go home at night.

On the other hand, I've been impressed with the attention that Syracuse has paid to my child, much more of a personal touch than UConn, including calls from the Dean to offer her a scholarship. So I'm with Jay and would opt for Syracuse if I were you.
