"The first English settlers arrived in 1635. Pastor Thomas Hooker and Governor John Haynes led 100 settlers with 130 head of cattle in a trek from Newtown (now Cambridge, Massachusetts) in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and started their settlement just north of the Dutch fort. The settlement was originally called Newtown, but was changed to Hartford in 1637 to honor the English town of Hertford the explorer also created the town of Windsor(created in 1633).These towns have been here for over 375 years."

It was named for Hertford, England, the birthplace of one of Hooker's assistants, the Rev. Samuel Stone.

"Manchester, in Hartford County, is located in north-central Connecticut. First known as Five Mile Track, and later as Orford, or Charlotte, it was settled in 1672 and incorporated from part of East Hartford in 1823. The Hockanum River provided the waterpower that made it an early center of textile manufacturing and home to Cheney Brothers Mills, the world’s largest silk factory complex, which provided Manchester with its nickname, the Silk City. An early industrial town, Manchester produced everything from paper to repeating rifles and glass. In the latter-half of the twentieth century, industry greatly declined, however, and today the town is largely a regional center of retail commerce."

"The state of Connecticut got its name from the Connecticut River, which runs through the central part of the state before emptying into Long Island Sound. The word comes from the Indian name "Quinnehtukqut," meaning "beside the long, tidal river."

How did Connecticut get its name?

Manchester, as with many other places names in CT, is named after an English town or city ( Manchester, England )

Many towns within Connecticut are named after or come from towns/cities from England such as Simsbury, Bristol, Norwich, Stafford, Oxford, etc.

Worcester, Leicester, Cambridge, Colchester, Chelmsford, and Plymouth are towns in Massachusetts and in England

Quick aside: during a trip to England I learned that "Hertford" and "Hartford" are pronounced the same.

Americans also pronounce the "e" in place names borrowed from England where the "e" is still pronounced like an "a" across the pond. Examples include Berkshire and Derby.

So Derby, England became Darby, Pennsylvania and Hertford, England became Hartford, Connecticut.
