Question thinking of moving

I am thinking about moving to Torrington. I have small children and was wondering if someone could let me know what Torrington is like. We have driven through a little and fell in love with the way some of the towns look. Right now we live in the city and we are looking to get away from the city life. Is there any part in particular I should or should not look in? I am very interested so please w/b. Thank you

Torrington is a relatively safe town. Not very pretty itself but some of the outlying towns are gorgeous. Goshen is beautiful but there is not much to do besides antique shops and camping. Milford is a beautiful town on the coast with a lot to do. Tons of shopping, restaurants, clubs ect.

new milford is a nice town. schools are nice and it still has a some what hometown feel. pretty expensive as far as houses go but is close to danbury (15-20 min ride) and not far from new york state. have beautiful candlewood lake if you like boating and fishing.

Although your post was in 2006 if my opinion is still usable - here it is! We originally moved to Torrington because it was an affordable pocket in the NW corner. Now we know why. The schools are terrible (check out greatschools.net) and the property taxes are outrageous. I wouldn't mind paying the taxes if our kids actually got a good education but no such luck!! We are in the process of moving to Goshen CT (Woodridge Lake) and our $420,000 house in torrington actually cost us more in taxes than a $550,000 house in Woodridge Lake (and that includes the approx. $1,000 association fee we will pay in Woodridge Lake). Torrington is a cute friendly town but the schools and taxes are terrible!!!!

Employment may be a problem in Torrington. It is a small older industrial city that has lost a lot of manufacturing jobs in recent years. It is also a bit isolated from the major employment centers. The city is changing but it may be time before there are a lot of good jobs available. check out the job market for what you do and then make a decision. Good luck, Jay

PS - there is another new poster asking about Torrington. check out the responses they get as well.
