NF has great schools, resident programs and Parks and Rec that more than make up for a limited downtown. Speaking of food --another good place to go is Pawling NY, but I am sure you know. I personally try to avoid downtown Danbury after dark. Same for Brewster.
I love Pawling!! McKinney & Doyle is fantastic and their bakery section is my go-to place when we have weekend guests and I want to have Danish/pastries on hand.

That restaurant is great. A foodie's place. I may confuse it -- but I think their wines are spectacular.
About La Zingara -- the place seems busy everytime I go by. But I have liked Greenwood Grille in Bethel and keep going back there. They treat us well there. I only do Danbury for Fajitas and Margaritas.
Also, if Prospect has a town center, it is entirely unremarkable because I cannot think of where it is. I can picture Sherman's and Goshen's but Prospect escapes me.

Uhh... Beacon Falls has a very defined town center.. there's a church, firehouse, police station, several restaurants, a post office...there's even street lighting and sidewalks..
Newtown: on one hand, it's kind of obvious: the flagpole intersection of Main St and Church Hill Rd.
On the other hand, there isn't much there. Little reason for anybody to walk there or be there. Few businesses and not much foot traffic.
So I would argue that Newtown is a place without a real town center.
Newtown has a beautiful town center -- I think that is an historic district.
