I plan to move to southern CT, anywhere between Fairfield and East Lyme, and need help narrowing down school districts with excellent services for my high functioning autistic 5 year old. He is currently in an incredible program in NYC called ASD Horizon and I am afraid that a move to a lesser program may negatively impact him. Any/all input is greatly appreciated!! I also have a 1.5 year old baby girl who may need speech services but all else is progressing well. Thanks so much.

I am surprised that no one here has responded to this. We get requests for towns that provide these services all the time but this one may be the first for this particular area. The OP gives a very wide range of locations but it includes some very good towns with excellent schools. I cannot speak to the special services needed for autism but the towns that are generally considered to have the best performing schools are Fairfield, Woodbridge/Orange, Madison, Guilford and East Lyme. I would also add a town like Milford and Branford as well. This of course does not mean they will offer services similar to what you receive now in New York but if you can identify what about the program your child is in is so good, you may be able to find something similar in one of these towns. I live in Trumbull and I know lots of people that have moved here who have special needs children. I also know people with special needs children who have moved to Fairfield. They are very happy with their decision. In fact Trumbull was the first town (I believe) that built a school just for special needs children.

"Trumbull Early Childhood Education Center
Founded in 2005, Trumbull Early Childhood Education Center (TECEC) is the first free-standing public special needs preschool program in Connecticut. Built on the firm foundation of an integrated education model, every classroom in TECEC educates children of all learning-capacities, emphasizing the importance of inclusion and understanding. TECEC believes no child is typical; that every child is unique; and all children have valuable contributions to the lives and educations of their classmates."

Welcome to Trumbull Early Childhood Education Center

I know sometimes I complain my taxes are high in Trumbull but then I remember we have this school. I am proud to support this school.

I have a friend with a young autistic son. She is super protective.... I forgot exactly where she lives but I can ask her if you're interested. She'd probably be a great resource for you.
