I think some of this might be because they are in the process of re-opening/re-building them I think. There was a brief period where they were shut down completely. I assumed that since they were closed, there was enough noise to get them re-opened again... but they needed work.

Anyone have insight into this?

I think some people are getting confused between Service Areas and Welcome Centers. Service Areas are the ones that have gas stations and food venues like Subway or McDonalds. These are not closing early since they are operated by an outside vendor the state leases to every so many years. The state just solicited leases a couple of years ago for them and the new company has refurbished all of the areas along the Merritt and Wilbur Cross Parkways and I-95.

The Welcome Centers and Rest Areas are run independently by the state and usually have no amenities other than a building with bathrooms and tourist information. These are the ones which hours have been cut back on. The articles on this notes that when the buildings and restrooms are closed, portable potties will be available. Not the best thing but it is something at least.

I hope that the state is looking into possibly turning a couple of these into full service areas operated by a private company so they can be a source of income rather than a burden. I would think the couple on I-84 would be good prospects for this as would the welcome center in Middletown on I-91. Jay

Just seems like you continuously come to the defense of the democratic government in this state, who continue to fail us at every turn...

I don't think it's partisan. Malloy is uniformly unpopular for his style, among both parties! Hence he's known as the porcupine...

I am not coming to anyone's defense. I am simply pointing out reasons for different things and that both sides are to blame for our problems. I am not someone who thinks everything is black and white. There is a lot of gray in between and people should be aware of that. Jay
