Cool Commuting Question....help!

MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT MOVING FROM LONG ISLAND TO CT. WE ARE FOCUSED ON NEW CANAAN AND WESTPORT. HE HAS A JOB IN THE WORKS BUT WE JUST AREN'T SURE BECAUSE IT INVOLVES TAKING LESS OF A SALARY THAN HE IS MAKING NOW. WE JUST CAME UP WITH A NEW IDEA BUT AREN'T SURE HOW REALISTIC THIS WOULD PLAY OUT. MAYBE SOMEONE CAN SHED SOME LIGHT. HE IS THINKING OF KEEPING THE JOB IN HUNTINGTON, LONG ISLAND AND COMMUTING TO AND FROM NEW CANAAN.....BUT I SHOULD ALSO MENTION THAT HE HAS A 4 DAY WORK WEEK SO MAYBE IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE. ALTHOUGH NEW CANAAN AND WESTPORT ARE CONSIDERED EXPENSIVE WHERE WE LIVE ITS OUTRAGEOUSLY EXPENSIVE AND THE TAXES WE PAY ARE ABOUT $30,000 ON 2 ACRES, ETC.... SO KEEPING THE HIGHER SALARY AND BEING ABLE TO SPEND LESS MIGHT BE A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE. HOWEVER FOR 4 DAYS EACH WEEK HE WOULD HAVE TO DRIVE TO AND FROM CT. HE WOULD TAKE THE THROGS NECK TO THE HUTCH OR TO I-95. IS THIS INSANE OR IS IT JUST THE SAME AS ALL THE PEOPLE GOING TO AND FROM NYC????? [he is dr. so when on call he would stay at his parents house. probably once a week]

You could take the ferry from Bridgeport, CT to Port Jefferson, NY.

People in the New York region do a lot of crazy things commuting. This may be pushing the limit though. The trip from New Canaan to Huntington would be about 90 minutes without traffic (Westport may be a bit longer). With traffic it could be a lot longer. Traffic through Stamford and crossing the bridge to LI is difficult during rush hour. Not something I would want to do but it would be up to your husband to decide if this is too much. It sounds like he has a place to stay in inclement weather which is good so he does not have to drive back and forth during the worst times.

Personally, I would look seriously at the other offer and see if it makes sense. My current job is a mile form my home and I can not tell you how wonderful it has been to be there for my kids. I have had offers to make more money but they would require a commute so I turned them down. Money is not everything. A good quality of life is really a lot more important than a few dollars. If the job is a good one, it may be worth it to take a pay cut. Good luck, Jay

I would agree. That's insane.

Just another tip: please don't yell. Writing in all uppercase is incredibly difficult and painful to read and it's considered yelling, and therefore rude. Thanks.
