Default 2 moms with family relocating to central CT

Greetings!
We are 2 moms with a fabulous little girl possibly relocating from San Francisco, California to Connecticut. We are looking for some suggestions of great towns to check out. We are interested in great schools of course, but most importantly, a place where we can feel comfortable as a same-sex family. We love a little culture, historical homes and recreation of all sorts, so
please send us your ideas, we'd love to hear them. We need to be within commuting distance of Bristol....

it all really depends on how much you want to spend. CT is a small state, that is very tolerant-- give us some ideas on what you feel you can afford- and we can exponent from there. The options for gay folks in CT are unlimited .From upscale in southwestern CT, to a more rustic laid back atmosphere in NW Connecticut, to eastern CT- incredibly affordable and great culture so close.

I have to echo the previous poster. You've pretty much described every town in CT. There are same sex couples everywhere and I know in my town, Clinton, there are several with kids and no one thinks twice about it. It's a great little town but might be a bit of a commute to Bristol.

Could you narrow it down a little more? We would love to help

There are many towns within a reasonable commuting distance of Bristol that should meet your needs and desires. As rajmelk suggested, you might consider West Hartford. It is great diverse suburban town with excellent schools and a wonderful downtown area that has a lot to offer. West Hartford is a reasonable distance to Bristol. You do not indicate a price range but West Hartford has a wide range of housing options, so you should be able to find somehting in your price range. Most homes in West Hartford are older, on smaller lots in nice walkable neighborhoods.

Other towns to consider would be Farmington. Avon, Simsbury, Burlington and Canton. These are beautiful towns that are a bit more rural in character. They have excellent schools and a lot of family activities. I hope this helps, Jay

Since I'm not sure what your price range is, I'll mention the following towns:

West Hartford - A very wide selection of houses to choose from. 170+/- active listings. Average sales price around $380,000 but there are a lot of homes available under $250,000 in great areas. Some historical homes available - mostly 1920s, colonials, bungalows, etc. Good schools, lots of activities, culture, diverse. This would be my top suggestion.

Wethersfield - Old Wethersfield has many historical homes but they can be hard to come by. Less culture & activities than West Hartford but lower avg sales price - around $280k. Currently about 100 active listings but only a handful are in or close to the historic area.

Newington - Some older homes (around 1920s-1930s). Less on the market - about 70 listings. Avg sales price is $250k. Convenient location. Good schools - not as great as W Hartford but good.

Berlin/Kensington- Small, but closeknit historical area. Convenient. Good schools. Avg sales price around $300k and less than 70 active listings - only a handful are in historic area.

Other than West Hartford, most towns in the area have little in the way of adult activities that aren't kid-centric. Avon, Simsbury, Burlington & Canton are all lovely, too, but I wanted to mention communities that aren't as pricey.

Also, same sex couples are found in many communities in Central CT but you may want to check out Love Makes a Family. They may be able to give you some personal insight into where their constituents live.

Default more specifics..

Thanks everyone for being so helpful! Neither of us has ever been to your wonderful state, so it is all very new to us. We would love to find a home with at least .5 usable acres under $400,000 or so.. We will be heading back there in April but will have only 2 days to drive around and get a feel for towns and communities. Again thanks for all the help!!

1/2 acre is hard to come by in West Hartford but there are a few listings, although they all happen to be on busier streets.

Some towns I'll add are Windsor and Southington - historical aspect, good schools, nice main street areas and there are more properties on 1/2 acre lots. Lots of properties to choose from.

Someone else mentioned Farmington, Burlington, Canton, Simsbury & Avon - all good choices.

Some other Bristol area towns are Wolcott, Southington, Plymouth and there's also Harwinton with more land and it's pretty as a picture.
Don't leave out Bristol itself either because there's plenty of nice homes and neighborhoods there too.
