Just seems like a good deal - Profit Profit Profit!
Under normal circumstances yes, but with uncertainty regarding state funding...nope.

This liberal spending has to stop. This is why we're in the situation we're in, guys.
What would make this liberal spending? Darien's republican led board of finance just recently approved $6+ million to buy the 16 acre hunt club.

16 acres in Darien for $6M, now that's a steal!
Thats what I'm talking about - The rich get richer. Those who sit on their a--- get left behind.

It's an increase in spending by the local government, yeah? That's exactly what spending liberally means. Fine in some cases - in this case, absurd.

Your Darien example was well before the governor proposed his latest budget. There was not as much uncertainty in the suburbs as there is today. My point is, right now, towns need to watch closely what they're spending their money on, as long as we have the "redistribution of wealth" governor in office.

You forget that many of those who are affluent have suffered tremendous losses when taking risks. You're also comparing a person to a government. They are not equal.

Of course they have, thats why its a risk.
This is about opportunity and profit whether it's taken by a town or individual.
If this parcel were offered in Bolton or Coventry for $5M you tell them to take a hike. If it's offered in a WH or FFC you seriously consider it.

Again, as SeaDoo said above, under normal circumstances, sure. Under circumstances that may require towns to strip essential services to bare bones, irresponsible.

Actually, I think Jay is right.

Some of you guys are complaining about this years budget. That is definitely a major factor but it is thinking short term. If this is the only large piece of land left in Town, then the long term interests of the Town may justify spending the money. It is even possible, as someone said, that the Town may one day make money if it bought the property and resold it or parts of it.

Five million dollars is NOT a lot of money for a Town of 60,000+ people to spend for something that may impact the Town for generations, perhaps even centuries. Imagine 50 years from now, people in West Hartford saying we could have had that land for only 5 million dollars, but instead it went to another developer because the Town cheapened out. It would be like us saying that Connecticut could have had that land 50 years ago for a state park (insert your favorite park here) or a major roadway but instead they did not want to spend a million dollars.

The Town of Darien and its taxpayers can easily afford to make this investment .... actually its conservative spending ..liberal spending is when youre spending money you don't have.
