I'm certainly an experienced Amtrak traveller. I would take it between Stamford, CT and Philadelphia for 10 years anytime I wished to see my family. It's convenient as there is no traffic to deal with, tolls, or bad drivers. However delays are frequent. It was guaranteed that there would be some sort of delay every time I took Amtrak, no matter what time of day, as the northeast corridor is a well travelled train route. It runs form Boston to Washington DC. The trains are bound to get held up in NYC, Philadelphia, and Washington. It's also VERY expensive. However, given the price of gas these days, as well as the amount of money you pay in tolls, it may be worth doing the Amtrack thing.

I know you can get some sort of commuter's pass for Amtrak, and as I said, it can cost you a couple of hundred dollars at the least. On the other hand, a good friend of mine commutes from Greenwich to Jersey daily, and it does take about 2 hours each way to get to and from work. He hates it, and it's really tiring him out.

It's up to you how you would want to do it, but I would suggest either moving a bit closer to Rahway if possible, or seeking a job closer to where you live if that option is available as well. Either way it's going to cost you a lot of time and a lot of money.
