Lots of interesting stuff.....

1) I know some nowadays do tie "one event" (as recently as 10 years ago scientists were very careful to say you can't "tie one event"). I don't look at one event, I look at trends. As an example, yes we have had plenty of snowfall totals as high as we do now in the past, but they have never been so consistent, no it's not quite "year after year" but things like (I'm making this up but I'm not too far off) 3/4 of the last 15 winters having well above normal snowfall (and with a majority of them not having below normal temps) means something odd is going on.

2) I think there is a lot of strong evidence for greenhouse gases, and also a lot of strong evidence (but less publicized) for solar output (that chart showing the 1800s vs. today was a good example). The question in decades to come is which factor will be stronger, or will they "cancel each other out" (if solar output stays low). One thing the makes this all complicated is the only way to really know who is right is to wait and see, thus the fear by many that we are inviting catastrophe by "doing nothing" preemptively.

3) And of course other factors can play too. A theory similar to global warming for the general cooling from 1940 to 1980 was a buildup of chemicals in the atmosphere such as sulfates that dim solar radiation and cools the Earth in a manner similar to what happens after large volcanic eruptions (and would be some evidence as to solar output being a partial factor). The introduction of the catalytic converter to cars in 1975 made for an easy solution to this problem and it shows in the data.

Lots of good solid discussions here from both sides of the debate. I know I kind of brought it on, but I guess we can get back to next week's weather now....

It only did so in BDR for some reason I believe, it was definitely below normal in most other places. I think in Central Park it was about 2-3 degrees below normal.

3 more days to go!

For Bridgeport, CT its the coldest April since 1975. 6th coldest on record. 6" of snow this month makes it the 2nd snowiest.

Interesting to note 1966 & 1967 were the coldest on record and then the following year in 1968 it was the warmest April at the time.

Then 1974 was warmest and following year was 2nd coldest. We should of saved the world back then!!

For Hartford, CT... Coldest April since 1956! Nobody younger than 62 yrs old experienced an April like this.

3rd coldest on record since 1905. 7.6" of snow = 4th snowiest April on record

Cambium,

I agree with you that the issue is a lot more complex than most make it. Therefore, I would like to continue the discussion. But I also know that this thread is about the weather. So, if you want, should we make a new thread for climate change?

Otherwise, let's get back to the weather as you said before. It sure is getting lovely out!

That probably belongs in a different subforum, but venturing out into some of them gets... heated. Lot of people on both sides who will not want to debate the facts and interpretation of the data and instead spout talking points and yell at each other. There's a lot of nuance to climate change, but both sides have their own camps that they backed into and became tribal about.

That's all I really have to say on that issue.

In on-topic news, it's a lovely day today, going to be turning over the garden!
