Started quick like 2011-12 did...but that winter was fairly dry. Already have .69" in Hartford. Surprised it's all rain for central CT, despite this low not really being west like the wind/rain event of December 21st.

Loop is last 4hrs today. Focus on Southern NY, NW NJ, and in CT.

Watch the moisture moving North then all of a sudden everything stops and starts moving Southeast/East. This is called a "Pivot". It's what brings the most snows (or rain in todays case) to an area!

This is in response to the Upper Low catching up to the surface storm off the coast as well as everything pushing east.

While the storm is spinning Counter clockwise the force of the push east makes it pivot.

Pretty cool to see yet so sad to see as rain in January.

Quick look at the consecutive days in my backyard which saw 0 (zero) precip falling.
  • Only twice for entire 2018 had 7 dry days in a row! Only twice with 5.
  • Precip pretty much fell every 1-4 days and is continuing in January now.
  • We haven't had a stretch of 4 dry days in a row since November 18-20!
  • I'm hoping for a year long drought soon!! Just give me a week break PLEASE. Enough with this precip. When will it stop?

Oops! Cam used the dreaded "d" word! Just for that, throw Hartford's 1.05" of rain on him!

No flood watch for Hartford County...but did see a nice lake in a housing complex yard in southern Newington.

Unreal. I was coming here to say ... AMEN!!

And within 15 minutes it cloudied over and now it's raining.

Another day with precip. It was supposed to be sunny all day!

Didn't even have time to put the tarp back over the firewood after the strong wind gust before with sun.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
1221 PM EST Sun Jan 6 2019

.SYNOPSIS...
Deepening low pressure will continue to track northward into the
Canadian Maritimes, while high pressure builds in tonight through
Monday.

Clouds around 4-6 kft height have expanded across much of the
region.
Using model BUFKIT soundings, the moisture around this
level lingers through much of the day, so expecting the clouds
to linger as well with a few breaks of sun for this afternoon.
The region remains under cyclonic flow aloft today with a
deepening upper level trough moving across the Northeast.

Surface low pressure will be deepening as it moves into the
Canadian Maritimes. A series of cold fronts move across this
afternoon into early this evening.

The combination of cyclonic flow and cold advection will result
in periods of clouds, especially for locations north and west
of NYC.
Additionally, with deepening low pressure over the
Canadian Maritimes and high pressure building across eastern
Canada and the Great Lakes, a gusty northwest flow will develop
this morning and strengthen into this afternoon as the pressure
gradient increases with gusts up to 40 mph at times.

With cold air initially lagging, highs today will remain above
normal with readings in the mid to upper 40s for most locations
with a few 50 degrees readings forecast as well. It will feel
colder though due to the aforementioned winds.

Another 15 minutes and blue skies are in sight again. A look at GOES-EAST makes me think that more rounds are coming. On and off rain followed by bluebird skies. Lol. Also note the snowpack over Canada in this shot!
