Default CT Drivers License

Not sure if this is the best place to ask this question but
it would be great if somebody could give me some inputs!

I am new to CT and on a work visa (H1B).
I will be starting work in NJ in a couple of days
and will be commuting up and down for one or two days
in a week.

I have a Texas Drivers License and I went to the DMV
in Wethersfield to turn it in for a CT one and they tell me
I can't get a CT Drivers license because I dont work here in CT.
I told them I commute but they say I cant get a CT license if
my employer is not in CT.

Has anybody on this forum faced this
problem before?

Is there a solution to this? (Considering the fact that I reside
in CT and hence cant get a Drivers licence from NJ either)

Thanks!

Not sure why the place of your employment would even come up. I moved from out of state and recently got a CT license at the New Britain branch. I can state positively that I was asked to turn in my old license, show a passport or birth certificate, and show either a utility bill addressed to me at my CT address or a stamped piece of mail addressed to me at my CT address. I was definitely not asked to state my place of employment...indeed, whether I am even employed or not!

I would go to another branch and try again (armed with the above documents), if I were you.

I don't know what the protocol is for those in your situation.
There was a large bust in the Bridgeport office a couple of years ago of DMV employees who were selling licenses to illegal aliens, hence, the DMV procedures have become stricter.

Here's the link to their website:
Department of Motor Vehicles

That was a big scandal. The ringleader was Tracy Lucas Stevenson from Stratford. She was working at the DMV in Bridgeport and selling licenses to anybody with enough cash.

More recently Henry Kruszewski was fraudulently obtaining Licenses out of his driving school on Main Street in Stratford.

Quote:
The investigation revealed that there were a large number of drivers licenses issued to subjects using forged or counterfeit documents. Forms examined included documents denoting immigration status, student visa status, Social Security and school employment letters. State Police Detectives determined that the Driving School had submitted these forged documents to the DMV enabling illegal immigrants to obtain Connecticut drivers Licenses.

You've forgotten Karen Birch from STRATFORD, also!!!!

Really reason180, this doesn't need to be a pi**ing contest. That's the office where it occurred. So sorry if you're offended.

My husband and I ran into a similar problem. I am here in H4(spousal visa for H1B visa holders) visa and he is on H1B. When I went to get my CT license they also requested that my husband is present, showed our visa, passport, utility bill from CT. Now one of the bitchy ladies that sits at the front desk(there are two of them) at the New Britain office also said that he needed a letter of employment from his work(I am not allowed to work), which we got but when I went to the counter to present all these things they guy did not even ask for the letter of employment. I also got to keep my Canadian license which is considered like out of state license. Try another office and be persistent. Some of these people that work there have no clue what they are talking about even about things written on their own company websites. They are on a power trip most of the time.

Get your employer to write a letter saying you work out of your home in CT.

Good point!

Karen Birch was the Stratford resident that was connected with the Hells Angels. They hooked up thugs running from the law all across the country with Connecticut licenses.

That's truly bizarre. I wonder if you could do this through AAA if you have membership or if this is only for renewals.
