Just out of curiosity, I've done some looking online at the real estate market in lower CT. We're planning to head back to IL no later than 2020, but theres somewhat of a possibility my wife's corp transfer may become permanent.

Anyway, back to the listing...WOW, just wow. Look how outdated that place is. Wood panelling?! 1200 sqft?! There aren't even photos of the kitchen (it must be a real gem, no doubt).

I realize prices are dictated by supply & demand. Apparently the demand is there if people are really insane enough to pay these prices for a TINY home that is easily going to need $100k in renovation. Why choose to live in a shoebox though as opposed to buying something much nicer in a non brand-name district and send the kids to private school (if they're against the notion that a dedicated kid with a supportive home can succeed in any public school) ?

I really don't understand CT. The focus on 'brand names' here is crazy. Luxury vehicles everywhere, designer clothes, restaurants with $30 burgers, etc...its all just beyond me. It really is a whole other world out here.
I am surprised you can even find a small house in Darien that has not been enlarged.

Here is the thing. There is only ONE Wall Street and they make tons of money there. Darien is about a 60 to 70 minutes train ride to get into Manhattan not far from Wall Street. That is who you are competing with when you are looking at houses in Greenwich, Darien, Stamford and New Canaan. Not to mention the upper management of the many companies in NYC too.

I grew up in North Stamford but Trumbull was really the first place my husband and I could afford a home but we accept that for what it is. My husband was raised in Stamford too.

GoPack does your wife work in Stamford or NYC? If it is Stamford the posters on here can give you advice on some nice towns with very good school systems that are about 1/2 the average home price of Darien or New Canaan if her job becomes permanent.

If she works in NYC then it would be harder as she would have a very long commute to get away from the very high prices of Greenwich/Darien/New Canaan.

Not really. Fairfield is more diverse economically with homes ranging from modest apartments to mansions. Trumbull is more middle class with few apartments and few mansions. It is great for people who want a little more for their money but do not want to give up good schools. A lot of people I know that grew up in Fairfield ended up in Trumbull. Jay

Where I live $500,000 gets you a 4 bedroom 2 and a half bath 1,630 square foot home built in 1962. One just sold three doors down for $509,000.

A half hour from here up the coast and the same home sells for $800,000. A half hour from here down the coast and the same house sells for $2,000,000.

Location is everything I guess.

Really?

Trumbull Household Income 2015: $114,194
Fairfield Household Income 2015: $110,601
(City Data info)

BTW, Trumbull schools are now the best in it's DRG which includes Fairfield.

"But Cialfi said he was most proud that the students in Trumbull schools ranked #1 in Trumbull’s Demographic Resource Group (DRG) in SBAC performance. The state divides school systems into DRGs for comparison purposes. Trumbull’s group, DRG B, includes Fairfield, Greenwich, Monroe, Newtown, Cheshire and Madison, among others."
