Default Teaching in CT (HS or community college)

Hi, I am wondering what options are open to me in CT.

I have a BS in Math and Chemistry and a Masters in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics (basically applied math). Currently I am a per course instructor for undergraduate classes at the University of RI.

I will be moving to either eastern CT or north-western RI this summer. Basically I am looking for a job which would be full time with benefits. I love teaching at the college level, however I realize without a PhD there aren't many options besides what I am doing now (which equals no benefits). Also, I prefer math (and even science) over general economics.

I have no state hs teaching license, so I am curious what options are open to me. I have heard there is a shortage of math teachers in CT, but what are my chances of getting hired with no license? Also, are there many community colleges that hire full time with only a masters?

Any suggestions you could give me in locating a job (in eastern CT preferably) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You need state teaching certification to teach in a public high school in CT. Private schools, however, do not require teacher certification; many hire teachers with only a bachelors degree. The pay scale at private schools is significantly lower, however, than at public schools. There is something called the ARC (Alternative Route to Certification) program that is a fast-track for becoming state certified. I can provide you a link to the info if you are interested.

From what I've seen, most of the state and private universities here do prefer that faculty have a PhD.

At the community college level, I think you might have a chance of finding something. I did a quick search and found the following job posting at Middlesex Community College in Middletown:

Middlesex Community College

Good luck!

You only need a masters to teach at community college, no education degree needed.
