So, Im going to commuting into Hartford to start my new job at St. Francis Care 84 east, where the doctors offices are..my start time us 8:30 a.m. the walk from the parking garage to the office I'll be working at is very long... so wondering at what time is 84 east the busiest? I worked in Hartford many years ago for Aetna but i would start at 6 a.m and theres hardly anyone on at that time. Can anyone help?

84 through Hartford is one of the most congested highways in the country. If we did not have the Stamford mess on 91, it would be the worst in the state. I do not drive to Hartford on a daily basis. My experience is that it slows to a crawl between 0700 and 0930 starting in West Hartford. I'd take that into account. I just know it's a terrible drive, its congested nearly all day with the exception of the late night and 1000 to 1100.

The backup often starts between exits 39/40 (usually right before Corbin's Corner) and it is usually the worst from about 7:30-9.

It is easier to get around if you are coming from someplace like Southington, because you have the option of taking route 9 or riding in on Farmington Avenue, etc.

Ok so going to Asylum Ave, do you know if a way that might be quicker? When I had to go to Hartford behind Hartford Hospital I would take the Berlin Turnpike up from over by the Humane society and go that way. However, that will be out of my way.....

You really have the worst of both worlds with that one. Makes it seem like the freeway is a great choice. In reality Hartford really needed to have a ring road, but the suburbs got mad about that. It's besides the point.

I don't know how long it takes, or where you are coming from, but have you considered driving north to 44 and coming onto Asylum Ave that way?

Alternatively, you could New Park Ave to swing by the Mark Twain House and get there that way. I don't know how heavy traffic is on New Park Ave. I would assume many commuters like yourself would also be taking it to get to work in the city.

I live in Prospect. My neighbour works in Hartford, at an insurance company. We both start work at the same time (0900), but I leave my house at 0830 for Wallingford, and he leaves... about 0700-0730. I don't really pay attention but I do know it is early. I declined employment in Hartford before due in some part to having to take 84. Not my cup of tea.

I-84 is horrlble off-peak. I wouldn't take a job that I had to drive that road every day no matter what my hours were. Same with commuting south of the New Haven area. They should put in a subway system in Hartford. Then most people wouldn't drive to town at all, they'd park in commuter lots at or near subway stations and take the train in. No traffic because you're not on the roads.

This is a no-brainer. It's a 1 mile / 20 minute walk to St Francis from Sigourney Street Station. There's the Hospitals-Capital Shuttle service (route 161) from Sigourney Street Station every 15 minutes with an 8 minute scheduled ride time if you don't want to walk it in the dark or in bad weather.
