Hartford county has many fine towns to live, , south, north and west/east of the Hartford/the Connecticut river. Winchester?? Not aware of the town. Manchester is a good choice- but there are many others; West Hartford, Avon, Simsbury, & Farmington west of Hartford. Wethersfield, Rocky Hill & Newington south of the city. Manchester, South Windsor, Vernon, Ellington, Tolland & Coventry east of the river.
Many fine parks, great shopping, world class restaurants and culture, several movie complexes, showing mainstream and art films. The Wadsworth in Hartford is the oldest public and one of the best Museums in the nation. There is also the New Britain Museum of American art-also nationally renowned. The Connecticut Opera, Hartford stage Company and Hartford Symphony are also high rated. You do not have to go far for anything your heart may desire in metro Hartford. |

I believe Winchester is the town where Winsted is located. It is 25 miles NW of Hartford. Commuter bus service to Hartford is available.
It's a rural community with Winsted serving at its downtown. Winsted has an ample number of basic services for most of its residents. A short 8 to 10 mile drive down Route 8 (4 lane limited access highway) to Torrington will offer lots of shopping, movies and the Warner Theater. Warner Theatre: The Destination for Arts, Culture & World-Class Entertainment! There are numerous parks and forests in NW Connecticut and you will never be more than a few minutes away from a place to walk or hike, fish, camp, or ride a horse. BTW. You can drive about 30 minutes via Route 8 to Waterbury and catch Metro North to NYC. When I lived in Simsbury, I recall my friend's father commuting to Manhattan on a daily basis when he worked at Exxon. Took the train from Waterbury. Manchester will be more difficult because you will have about a 40 to 45 minute drive to Metro North in Waterbury or New Haven. I don't know if Amtrak has regular daily scheduled services during the rush hours to New Haven (to Metro North) or New York City. That might be an alternative if you decide to live east of the Connecticut River but near Hartford. Call Amtrak for schedules. |
