Hey all! I am having such a hard time coming up with a small list of cities to buy our first house. We are a latino family with a 3 year old. I work in the GC area so I will need to take the metro north. My husband, on the other hand, will need to drive to Bronx for work (at least for now, but he has the possibility of transferring to other locations in either Orange, Hartford or Waterbury). Which family oriented areas with good schools, low crime scene, some degree of diversity and decent commuting time to GC would you recommend? I am also considering Westchester, but it seems that in CT I can buy more for less.

Thanks in advance!

Areas close to NYC in CT can be pricey

Budget is around 500,000 for a 2 bedrooom house. Looking for a quite, family friendly neighborhood with the characteristics indicated in my original post.

The closest town to New York with that budget would be Fairfield. It has good schools, is very safe and there are three train stations on Metro North. The drive to the Bronx will be difficult during rush hour though. Jay

Stamford would be an excellent option. There are plenty of family homes in your price range. It's the most convenient to get to Manhattan and the Bronx in your price range. If you want "diversity", we've got diversity, plenty of it. I suggest that you start with the Glenbrook and Springdale areas on the east side of town, they both fit your criteria. Contrary to the beliefs of many here, the schools are fine, I put my two kids through the system with no complaints and I'd do it again.

It would make a commute to Orange, etc. a bit longer if your husband is transferred, but at least he would be going against the traffic. If he's going to be transferred to Hartford, you would need to move closer and your commute to Manhattan would be difficult, so you've got to pin that down before you decide where to move.

The problem with Stamford is that the schools do not perform well. The OP is looking for good schools. I would not recommend Stamford to someone looking for good schools. Jay

FYI, depending on the location in the Bronx, a commute via train may be possible, as well. Local trains on the New Haven line stop at Fordham (a few blocks from the Grand Concourse & D/B trains) and can be boarded in Stamford (where they originate). A driving commute would be rough.

I would wait till your husband gets transferred if he gets transferred. Picking Stamford is convenient for you right now but even though bronx is only a 30min drive without traffic from Stamford its always traffic and could take an hour plus going and over 2 hours going back depending on times. If you was to get a house in Stamford and he gets transferred to Hartford, it creates another issue of traveling. New haven area would be better if that was the case but now your commute would be further which is not goodnif you have to get kids and ect together
